Fiber Network Field Technician

Winter 2022

ERC is currently looking for a Telecommunications Field Technician to join our organization in Asheville, NC. Under the guidance and instruction of the Network Operations Manager, the candidate will work in a fiber-based, Internet Service Provider arena, performing installation, turn-up and field testing of network equipment used in voice, video, fiber optics and data telecommunications networks.

Requirements:

  • 1-2 years technical experience in telecommunications, fiber-optics, electrical wiring and/or cabling
  • Strong technical aptitude and ability to research & solve complex issues independently
  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills and apply them as needed
  • Ability to effectively communicate issues and resolutions to all levels of the organization
  • Must be a team player with excellent customer service & organizational skills
  • Be available 24x7 in order to respond and assist with network emergencies
  • Must be able to pass background investigation in order to work in the Asheville Federal Building

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Works closely with Network Engineering team and Project Manager in order to plan and coordinate equipment installations based on due date, customer requirements and other relevant factors
  • Prepares for installations by performing site surveys, studying service orders and technical specifications; gathers all necessary equipment, supplies, materials, and tools, needed for install
  • Installs routers, switches, transmission (optical and electrical) and power equipment in ERC Points-of-Presence (PoPs), colocation facilities and various other outside-plant locations in the region
  • Establishes voice and data networks by running, pulling, and terminating cables; forming neatly organized, tagged/labelled physical connections while following industry standards
  • Tests and validates all new circuits, hardware and connections for proper configuration and performance, verifying network functionality and proper alarm conditions
  • Documents network installations using photographs, diagrams and clearly written technical documentation
  • Interfaces with customers, property managers and site contractors, building and maintaining strong customer relationships by answering questions, listening to and resolving concerns
  • Ensures safe work environment by following codes, standards, and legal regulations
  • Maintains all spare stock of last-mile/CPE equipment - regularly inventorying, placing orders, verifying receipt
  • Other duties as required and / or assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; technical degree preferred
  • Strong written, verbal communication and computer skills (MS Office) skills
  • Must be adaptable to changing environments
  • Be able to lift 50 lbs to height of 7 feet, occasional lift/carry of 51-100 lbs, climb ladders, and work from platforms at heights of 11- 12 feet or more
  • Must be willing to travel extensively within the region and have own reliable transportation
  • Meet pre- employment background investigation, including previous five (5) years driving and criminal conviction records and pass substance screening
  • Must be at least 18 years of age and possess a valid NC driver's license
  • Ability to distinguish colors and read cabling/wiring designs (electrical, OSP, ISP)

This position will be centered on operations at the ERC’s primary office, but will travel in the region for circuit turn-ups & troubleshooting. Travel outside the region should be less than 10%.
