POSITION SUMMARY

The Pharmacy Technician assists the licensed Pharmacist in preparation and distribution of drugs, maintaining drug inventory, and maintaining records for a hospital with a patient population ranging in age from 18 years to geriatric experiencing medically complex conditions, general medical surgical conditions with rehabilitation needs. The Pharmacy Technician performs specific job responsibilities authorized by the State Board of Pharmacy Rules and Regulations under paragraph 291.73.  

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Qualifications:
•    Ability to project a Professional Image.
•    Knowledge of regulatory standards, compliance requirements and hospital policies and procedures.
•    Working knowledge and ability to apply professional standards of practice in job situations.
•    Strong organizational and analytical skills.      
•    Working knowledge of personal computer and software applications used in job functions (Word processing, graphics, databases, spreadsheets, etc.).

Education and/or Experience:
•    High School Graduate or equivalent.
•    One (1) Year of hospital pharmacy technician experience preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
•    National Pharmacy Technician certification preferred or other exam approved by State Board of Pharmacy.
•    CPR certification.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
English is the primary language of the facility.  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and policy procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of executives, managers, clients, customers, and the public.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.  Also the ability to create and interpret graphs.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and/or diagram form.  Ability to define and solve problems, collects data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in statistical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

  • Accept, interpret, fill, and distribute pharmaceutical requests.  Seeks clarification of any order believed to be inaccurate non-effective, or contraindicated by consulting with the appropriate licensed practitioner and notifying the ordering practitioner when making decision not to dispense medication.  Effective communication skills with all members of the healthcare team. 
  • Maintains adequate level of pharmaceutical supplies.  Keep environment safe and clean.
  • Actively participate in performance improvement activities.  Participate on performance improvement teams as needed.  Complies with and demonstrates knowledge of accreditation standards and National Patient Safety goals.
  • Remain current with literature related to departments for which responsible and maintain an updated methodology, tools, manuals, and criteria as necessary and appropriate.

•   Appropriately accesses the resources of the company’s regional offices for consultation and program development support.  Seeks out external resources through conferences, workshops, etc. as necessary.  Routinely shares professional knowledge with staff, managers and hospital personnel.

•    Attend and participate in facility meetings as required.
•    Access continuing education opportunities appropriate to responsibilities.
•    Participate in hospital wide patient safety program identifying risks to patient safety and reducing healthcare errors.

•    Consistently follows departmental and hospital Health, Safety, Security, Hazardous Materials policies and procedures.
•    HIPAA: Conduct job responsibilities in accordance with HIPAA privacy laws, follow hospital policy in provision of patient confidentiality. Able to identify patient confidentiality issues and reports to proper hospital personnel immediately.
•    Compliance: Conducts job responsibilities in accordance with standards set forth in Code of Conduct, policy and procedures, applicable federal and state laws, and applicable standards.
