Instrumental Music Teacher (Flute Saxophone Specialist -Percussion Specialist -Strings Specialist )
Definition:
Under the supervision of the Music Coordinator and the Building Principals, the Instrumental Music
Teacher is responsible for teaching beginner and intermediate pedagogical concepts to students in grades
5-8 and assisting the staff of the schools in the improvement/appreciation of standards-based music
instruction. A successful candidate will bring enthusiasm towards developing a program that helps
students grow in their enjoyment, appreciation, and performance of music through weekly music lessons
in a small group setting, engaging with students through modeling, reading, singing, moving to music,
listening, and playing the instruments. All those who apply should understand they are expected to
perform all other duties directly related to this job description.
Roles & Responsibilities:
This position is an itinerant position. Access to reliable transportation is required as the candidate is
expected to travel between all district K-8 schools (as assigned) as well as Everett High School.
- Create a safe and welcoming learning environment with engaging lessons and activities as part of a skills-based, comprehensive instrumental pedagogy program that meets the needs of diverse learners in the Everett Public Schools.
- Establish positive relationships with students and their families, while regularly communicating in regards to a student’s progress.
- Select repertoire, rehearse, and conduct the middle school Jr. Tide Band, in both small group lessons and full ensemble rehearsals daily.
- Join in after school Select Band rehearsals once per week along with the entire Instrumental team.
- Collaborate with the instrumental music team to plan and deliver school-based and districtwide concerts throughout the year: a Holiday Concert, a Spring Band Concert, and building-based concerts at each school.
- Maintain care/responsibility for school-owned items, musical instruments, and equipment to prevent loss or abuse. Coordinate repairs to instruments as required.
- Evaluate each pupil’s musical growth, performance, and musical understanding.
- Select appropriate music, curriculum books, and instructional aides to enhance learning and requisitions musical instruments and instructional supplies as necessary
- Regular involvement with EHS Marching Band staff (extracurricular) is strongly encouraged, whether through additional stipend opportunities, or coordination for ongoing recruitment andmentoring of EPS instrumental students.

Job Requirements:
Minimum B.M. in Music Education or B.A. in Musical Fine Arts
- Valid Massachusetts teacher certification in Music Education, K-12.
- Minimum of 1-year experience working in an urban public school setting is preferred.
- Knowledge of National and MA standards for music education as basis for instruction.
- Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, and other EPS employees.
- Willingness to collaborate with fellow building specialists and colleagues.
- Engage frequently with fellow Music Department educators from all across the district on cooperative projects, ensembles, and curricula.
- Demonstrate a commitment to excellence, equity, and professionalism at all times.
- Hold excellent written and oral communication skills in English. Prior experience withELL students is preferred. (Spanish, Portuguese, Haitian/Creole) A Second language (Spanish and/or Portuguese) proficiency a plus.
- Proficiency with technology (blended learning, teacher/family communication apps, Google G-Suite Apps, etc.) is desired.
