Job Summary
The Engineering Manager is responsible for overseeing the technical design of product, documentation and product release readiness to other departments and for implementing the planned schedules and design and testing priorities of the Engineering Department. This process includes specification review, design planning, Bills of Material, prototyping, testing, engineering change management, and the creation of supporting technical documentation such as drawing packages, manuals, specification and installation instructions. This is done with the goal of ensuring that the designs meet the customer requirements and technical specifications.
In addition, the Engineering Manager provides support to the Sales, Production, Supply Chain and Service Departments, assigns work to the staff, monitors, and reviews their work, develops test criteria for units and is ultimately responsible for the meeting time deadlines – both internal and external. The Engineering Manager directly contributes to the company’s success and profitability through cost effective creative design, innovative solutions to problems, and the utilization of the engineering resources.
Duties and Responsibilities
Design: The Engineering Manager is responsible for implementation and timely completion of all design activities at the Company and ensuring that these designs meet customer, Company, and industry standards.
This includes but is not limited to applicable electrical, ASHRAE, ISO (Quality and Cargo Container), military, EPA, CE, ATEX standards, and any customer-specific requirements for a given project.
This design process may also include the development of new software (in-house or through subcontractors) and building and testing of prototype units.
Assist Engineers to proactively develop innovated, cost-effective solutions to problems, design and select parts or approve parts selection and design by other engineers for Klinge products under development or design modification to meet customer specifications and/or shop requirements.

Maintain the Engineering Project Listing and chair weekly Engineering Project Status meeting with Engineering Manager.
Documentation: The Engineering Manager is responsible for ensuring timely and accurate completion of all technical documentation of Klinge unit, genset and systems design for purposes of later sales, production, training, and service.
The above includes but is not limited to the management of Engineering staff in creating new 3D models, Bills of Material, drawings, manuals, specifications, and test procedures and reports.
All drawings and routings are to be approved by the Engineering Manager or designee.
All initial testing documents or deviating completed test reports are to be reviewed and approved by the Engineering Manager or designee. So are final documents and reports.
Testing: The Engineering Manager is responsible for coordination of schedules for testing of both current and future proposed (prototype) designs.
Work with Engineering Manager to establish test criteria and prepare test plans that can be executed by an assigned individual to ensure that shop production meets the Klinge published or customer specifications. This includes both test sheets for use in Production Testing as well as PTI forms etc.
Engineering Change Management: The Engineering Manager is responsible for ensuring the timely handling of all Engineering Change Requests and implementation of approved changes to the design.
Engineering Department Management:
Assign work to everyone to ensure the employee’s talents are best utilized and the employee is productive.
Prepare and review weekly tasks sheets with staff to ensure timely completion and no schedule creep occurs other than caused by changes in Project or Task requirements.
Approve department employees’ paid time-off requests.
Review staffing levels based on priorities and requisition additional staff when needed.
Monitor performance and ensure employees record their time accurately using the Klinge time codes. Weekly review the time charged and take corrective actions, if needed.
Sales Support: In support of Sales, the Manager provides project estimates for engineering time and material costs (and in some cases estimated production labor). The Engineering Manager also ensures that subordinates assist Sales in resolving technical queries from customers as needed.
Production Support: In support of Production, the Engineering Manager will ensure subordinates are available for review of issues, ideas for improvement, and overall support of technical items which may come up during the course of manufacturing and testing the equipment.
Equipment Sales Order Review and Release: For all Sales Orders, including Internal Orders for stock, the Engineering Manager or designee ensures that the correct technical and part number information is included in the order and that a proper BOMs are included in the Sales Order prior to approving internal release at the Company.
General Duties and Responsibilities
Maintain friendly, cooperative relations with customers, vendors, company personnel and management.
Follow all Company personnel policies and procedures and enforce them uniformly throughout the department.
Demonstrate the ability to tactfully handle difficult situations.
Anticipate problems and provide contingency plans and recommendations.
Assist in completion of employee evaluations timely and discuss with the Engineering Manager before reviewing with the employee.
Organize personal schedule to maximize productivity, time management and delegations.
Perform other tasks or assignments as delegated by the Engineering Manager.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Business, or equivalent work experience.
High degree of computer competency.
Experience Required
Supervisory responsibility leading an engineering design department or project management group.
Preferred:
Specialized training in refrigeration engineering
Mobile refrigeration design experience.
Experience as a working engineer designing refrigeration equipment.
Shop floor experience, either as a production assistant or in a production role to obtain an understanding of the manufacturing/assembly processes.
