Your Challenge
EXP’s Burnaby office is currently seeking a Geotechnical Engineer specializing in advanced numerical modelling and earthquake geotechnical engineering to join their team. Reporting to the Geotechnical Discipline Manager, the successful candidate will be joining a well-established and diverse engineering group in Western Canada poised for growth and challenging opportunities well into the future.
Your Responsibilities
- Support our geotechnical team in advanced numerical modelling with FLAC2D, 3D and PLAXIS
- Participate in scoping new work, proposals and report writing
- Support project teams on diverse design needs for transportation and civil infrastructure projects
- Writing and reviewing technical reports;
- Continuing your own technical skills development and propagation of those skills to others.
- Demonstrable on-site experience with Seismic Engineering related to civil projects.
- The ability to establish and maintain solid client relationships.
- Utilizing combinations of standard procedures, modifications of standard procedures and methods developed in other assignments when analyzing each unique project;
- Reviewing and interpreting monitoring information from geotechnical instrumentation programs;
- Working with senior staff when dealing with difficult, complex and unusual matters and decisions;
- Performing independent studies, analyses, interpretations and conclusions;
- Work independently with little supervision, depending on the complexity of the assignment;
The Skills, Knowledge, and Ability We Seek
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or geological/geotechnical engineering with a focus on geotechnical numerical modelling
- Master’s OR Ph.D. degree in geotechnical engineering, an asset
- 5 years of pertinent experience
- Registered or eligible for registration as a P.Eng. in BC
- Experience in Numerical Modelling with finite element or finite difference codes, including earthquake dynamic analysis of soil structures and soil-structure interaction (FLAC 2D, 3D, and PLAXIS experience is preferred)
- Familiarity with some user-defined constitutive models such as PM4Sand / PM4Silt, NorSand or UBCSAND
- Ability to evaluate Experience with field investigation techniques such as CPT, SPT, BPT and their utilization in the static and seismic design
- seismic slope stability and lateral spreading displacement, and liquefaction induced settlement
- A strong theoretical understanding of soil mechanics (e.g. critical state soil mechanics) and geotechnical earthquake engineering
- Interest in field investigation and advanced geotechnical instrumentation design
- Experience with static and seismic liquefaction triggering assessment is an asset
- Experience with the selection and scaling of earthquake time histories for numerical analysis is an asset
- The ability to interpret seismic hazard reports and their application to seismic design is an asset
- Experience with laboratory testing including cyclic triaxial and cyclic simple shear is an asset
- Strong attention to detail and accuracy
- Team player with proven ability to work independently or as a member of project teams
- The ability to coordinate, mentor, and assign work to junior staff
- Ability to interface and communicate with our clients
- Excellent organizing, interpersonal written, and verbal communication skills
- Strong computer skills using word processing, spreadsheet, and graphics applications such as MS Word, Excel, and AutoCAD
- Proficient problem-solving skills
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and a reliable vehicle to travel to job site
