Position Summary:
Surgical Technologists are an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The surgical technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of surgical procedures.
Principle Duties and Responsibilities:
- Handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Understands the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon.
- Must possess the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and must maintain the sterile field.
- Collaborates with all surgical team members to assure the safe and efficient journey of a patient through surgery.
- Responsible for planning and organizing supplies, instruments, and equipment for surgical procedures.
- Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization.
- Secures dressings after incision closure.
- Fulfills inventory needs in the operating rooms and stock room.
- Other duties as assigned.
Work Relationship and Scope:
The Surgical Technologist works closely with all staff and physicians, reporting to the ASC Manager.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Vocational/Technical Certificate as a Surgical Technologist preferred or 2-4 years of direct patient care required
- CPR certification required
- Knowledge of state, federal, JCAHO regulations
- Strong communication skills; verbal and written
- Ability to develop good working relationships with physicians and staff
- Ability to work in a fast-paced medical facility while adhering to HIPAA compliance regulations
- Demonstrates knowledge of proper, safe, efficient usage of office equipment, computers, and software; working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Must be out-going and cordial; demonstrated through solid customer service skills/experience
- Must be flexible for changing job requirements
Work Conditions:
Work is generally performed at the main clinic; 800 First Street, Wausau, WI. Travel to satellite locations or outreach hospitals/surgery centers is required as needed. Hours of work will be dependent on the needs of the Clinic. Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting (30 pounds), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs is required.
