Registered Nurse
Eye Specialty Group is seeking a PRN - RN to assist in a fast-paced ambulatory surgery center. The Registered Nurse is responsible for providing nursing care to surgery center patients including assessments, and clinical care such as medication administration, placing IVs, and providing waived testing. The position will complete all required documentation as needed.
Essential Skills/Responsibilities:
- Performs the practice of nursing as stated by the Scope of Practice mandated by the TN and MS Board of Nursing. Follows the guidelines recommended by the AORN. Demonstrates competency to circulate ophthalmology cases and performs assessment of patients according to the centers’ policies and procedures.
- Maintains confidential information acquired concerning patients personal, financial, and medical information obtained at the centers.
- Maintains and develops nursing skills through department educational in-services.
- Reports to work at assigned times.
- Completes annual competency requirements.
- Maintains an open line of communication within the chain of command.
- Accepts any other assigned duties within their scope of practice to keep the Centers’ patient care flowing smoothly.
- Adheres to all of the Centers’ safety guidelines and their policies and procedures.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians in an outpatient setting.
- Maintains a good working relationship and effective communication both within the department and with other departments for the benefit of the patient.
- Demonstrates an ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
- Coordinates and supervises patient care.
- Provides clinical services including inserting IVs, taking vital signs, administering blood glucose testing.
- Administers medications according to physician orders.
- Performs a proper preoperative assessment in accordance with the centers policy and procedures and as needed postoperatively.
- Assesses and re-assesses the patient’s pain level. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient and family regarding pain management.
- Gives care to the patient, reflecting flexibility in rules and regulations, as indicated by individual patient needs.
- Makes decisions reflecting knowledge of facts, knowledge of diseases/surgical conditions, care required and good judgment.
- Performs point-of-care testing as needed, interprets results and takes appropriate action in accordance to unit’s policies and procedures.
- Reflects knowledge in all areas of care specific to outpatient surgery (i.e., ophthalmology, lasers, sedation).
- Organizes and manages nursing activities reflecting due consideration for patients’ needs and the needs of the facility and staff.
- Knows medications and IV fluids and their correct administration, based on age of the patient and patient’s clinical condition.
- Follows the five (5) medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
- Formulates a teaching plan, based on identified patient learning needs, and evaluates effectiveness of learning; family is included in teaching, as appropriate, from pre-op to discharge.
- Provides patient with explanation and verbal re-assurance consistently.
- Identifies physical symptoms on an ongoing basis and takes appropriate action in a timely manner if needed.
- Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
- Manages and operates equipment safely and correctly.
- Demonstrates an ability to assist physicians in the OR when needed.
- Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity. Practices good guest relations.
- Identifies and addresses psychosocial needs of patients and family.
- Carries out sterile technique during treatments and special procedures.
- Maintains an environment that provides the patient and family with feelings of safety and security.
- Consults other departments, as needed and as appropriate, to provide for an interdisciplinary approach to the patient’s needs.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to RN-Nurse Manager, co-workers, and physicians.
- Meets current documentation standards and policies and completes within the shift.
- Maintains current licensure and certifications needed.

Job Specifications/Competencies:
Education/Experience:
Completion of an Associate’s degree or higher in nursing. Current RN license required and ophthalmology and/or ASC experience preferred.

Physical Requirements:

- Ability to operate office equipment requiring the use of one hand.
- Corrected or uncorrected hearing capacity to enable suitable telephone communication skills.
- Ability to work in clinical environment with a moderate noise level.
