What are the responsibilities and job description for the Student Pharmacist, Year 1, In-Patient position at Fairview Health Services?
The 1st year pharmacy student position is the first part of the Southdale Intern Program. Until licensed as an intern, the student will staff as a pharmacy technician to understand the operations of the hospital pharmacy department. Once licensed, the student will then be trained as an intern in our program!

Location: Southdale Hospital, located in Edina, MN
Hours: Casual, will pick up shifts as needed by department
Schedule: day/evening shift, with 1 weekend per month requirement

Responsibilities
Under the direction of a pharmacist, primary responsibilities include:
- Assist in the dispensing of prescription medications to patients/customers ensuring accurate labeling and dispensing in a timely fashion.
- Identify and resolve patient specific medication related problems and issues in the patient’s best interest.
- Ensure dispensing of prescriptions in accordance with all legal requirements, regulatory agencies, third party contracts, and M Health Fairview Pharmacy Services Policy and Procedures.
- Prepares sterile products (both non-hazardous and hazardous) using appropriate aseptic technique while adhering to USP 797 requirements. Performs bulk compounding and packaging duties to ensure an uninterrupted supply of medications while adhering to USP 795 for non-sterile products, USP 797/800 for sterile products requirements and MN Board of Pharmacy rules.
- Identify additional opportunities to improve patient care and the performance of the pharmacy department.
- Participate in team meeting/discussions with clinical pharmacy specialists, pharmacy residents, pharmacy students and technicians.
- Cultivate an environment of teamwork with other department staff and customers.
- Provide training and education to other staff members.
- Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
Qualifications
Required Education:
- Enrolled as a Student at an ACPE accredited school of Pharmacy beginning Fall.
Additional Requirements:
- Excellent customer service skills
- Proficient in English language
- Capable of solving problems effectively,
- Ability to follow policies and procedures
- Data Entry
- Proficient mathematical skills.
Preferred Education:
- Enrolled as a Student at the University of Minnesota School of Pharmacy.
- Pharmacy experience in infusion therapies, retail and/or hospital setting preferred.
Preferred License/Certification/Registration:
- Current Minnesota Pharmacy Intern License
