Cable Technician

Position Purpose/Summary

The Cable Technician is committed to providing the highest quality of service to the communities, customers, and employees we serve by splicing, locating, terminating, testing, and maintenance of cables, including but not limited to, fiber, copper, and coax (CATV) cable.

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

1. Sizing and planning new installation of cables by our company or by contractors.
2. Identifies and counts groups of cable pairs and prepares the groups for splicing or termination.
3. Maintains cable system by testing to locate troubles, opening cable to repair or replace defective sections, using splicing techniques then closing and sealing cable.
4. Maintains cable air pressure by ensuring that all splice closures and termination points are airtight and free of moisture.
5. Ties or terminates cable to protector devices and main distribution frame at central office, laces cable down to cable vault, and splices into central office cable.
6. Ties customer drop cable to central office cable system, using splicing techniques and special equipment, such as multi-distribution stubs and terminal access boxes.
7. Repairs and maintains telephone and CATV drops.
8. Mounts demarcation devices and protectors at customers premises and attaches individual cable pairs of central office feeder cable.
9. Mounts terminal blocks throughout customer premises and attaches individual house or service cable pairs and ties other end of house cable to terminal block at demarcation point where all inside wiring and subscriber loop feeder cable meet.
10. Performs testing on completed splices or terminations to ensure dependable service.
11. Wires load coil into the subscriber loop plant, supports cable, splice closures, and distribution stubs as necessary.
12. Transfers customer’s service from one cable and/or terminal to another with minimal service interruption.
13. Installs and maintains all types of carrier systems and remotes.
14. Plows and maintains drops.
15. Performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

At a minimum, the Cable Technician must have a high school diploma, or equivalent, along with 3-5 years of related work experience, and a valid driver’s license. Experience with communications construction and a Fiber Optic Certification is preferred.
