POSITION: Emergency Communication Dispatcher

SALARY: $19.04-$22.08, per hour DOE

REPORTS TO: Debra Caudell

LOCATION: Mt. Tolman , Nespelem, WA

Basic Functions: Operates a multi-channel radio console and a multi-line telephone, while maintaining computer-aided dispatch systems and other computer systems for receiving, coordinating and disseminating instructions, yet typically non-critical information from various sources and maintaining radio contact with mobile/field police, fire, and life safety units to monitor response, progress and support.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Training:

  • Requires a High School Diploma or GED with demonstrated competency in geography, English language, and math.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Requires basic knowledge of law enforcement terminology, the operating protocols and procedures for emergency dispatch within public safety and the rules and regulations of the federal communications commission covering radio and voice transmission devices.
  • Requires knowledge of the Colville Reservation geography including major and minor highways and roadways.
  • Requires knowledge of and skill at using a computer, common office productivity software, geographic information systems, and specialized applications used in public safety for emergency dispatch.
  • Requires sufficient command of English language and grammar to record and relay information accurately, clearly, and concisely.
  • Requires sufficient human relations skills to gather information while calming callers who are under stress, employ advanced telephone interviewing skills to obtain critical information, and relay information accurately to responders.
  • Requires sufficient knowledge of math to record and compute quantities and distances.
  • Requires skill in learning new information quickly and in thinking and reacting quickly, clearly, and logically in routine or emergency situations that require rational thought, immediate comprehension and action in accordance with established policy and procedures.
  • Requires the ability to carry out the duties of the position.
  • Requires the ability to learn, master, and communicate on and operate a two way radio using codes and language specific to the job.
  • Requires the ability to learn to and simultaneously operate a computer-aided dispatch system, telephones, multi-channel radio, TDD (text telephone device for hearing/speech impaired), numerous computer databases and maps.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of information gained while working and restricting the use of suck information to work duties.
  • Requires the ability to make fast responses and quick and correct decisions, take charge of conversations, and obtain accurate information from callers and responders.
  • Requires the ability to communicate with callers of diverse backgrounds and cultures.
  • Requires the ability to use grammatically correct sentence structure.
  • Requires the ability to maintain certifications for law enforcement information systems and communications devices.
  • Requires the ability to pass a physical exam, hearing test, background investigation which includes polygraph and psychological examinations.
  • Requires the ability to work a variety of schedules during days and nights.
  • Requires the ability to attain the certifications necessary for sustained employment

Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.


TRIBAL MEMBER AND INDIAN PREFERENCE WILL APPLY; PREFERENCE WILL ALSO BE GIVEN TO HONORABLY DISCHARGED VETERANS WHO ARE MINIMALLY QUALIFIED.


If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
