MUSIC DIRECTOR’S JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: MUSIC DIRECTOR
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. All church employees must be baptized Christian believers.
2. Experience in training and developing voices, and teaching parts
3. Able to play an organ.
4. Must be able to work with other church musicians
5. Able to quickly learn music selected by the primary musician; requires the ability to listen effectively and to communicate clearly, both orally and in written form.
6. Requires the ability to speak confidently before groups.
7. Requires effective leadership skills.
8. Requires exceptional administrative skills.

REPORT TO:
The Music Director is responsible to the Pastor for assisting the church in planning, conducting, and evaluating a comprehensive music ministry.

The Music Director is responsible to the Board of Trustees for employment requirements and responsibilities.

GENERAL DUTIES:
1. This position is an exempt (salaried) and part-time position.
2. The Music Director works with the Pastor and Board of Christian Education in planning and directing the music program and ministries of the local church.
3. As an organist, you have primary responsibility for the Mass, Youth and Praise and Worship choirs
4. You are responsible to provide sermon closing music for the Pastor on Sundays.
5. Refer to the rehearsal and service schedules below for additional details.
6. You are required to attend a rehearsal for the choirs you are assigned to accompany.
7. All musicians must be prompt for rehearsals and arrive at least 15 minutes early for services.
8. The Music Director coordinates with all church organizations in planning, scheduling, and directing the music program and ministries of the local church.
9. The Music Director will also:
a. Direct the planning, coordination, operation, and evaluation of a comprehensive Music Ministry.
b. Work with the Music Committee in determining music ministry goals, organization, leadership, facilities, finances and administrative process.
c. Supervise the work of all musicians and music staff in the Music Ministry.
d. Be available to counsel, arrange and provide music for special projects, ministries, and other church-related activities in cooperation with appropriate individuals or groups.
e. Be responsible for training leaders for the Church Music Ministry.
f. Work in cooperation with the appropriate persons in selecting, enlisting, training, and advising song leaders, accompanists, and other musicians.
g. Coordinate the performance schedules of music groups and individuals in the functions of the church.
h. Supervise maintenance of and additions to music library and equipment, including music materials, supplies, instruments and other music equipment for use in the church's program.
i. Keep informed on current music methods, materials, promotion and administration, utilizing them where appropriate.
j. Coordinate the training and use of instrumentalists and vocalists in groups or as individuals.
k. Comply with all established church policies and procedures as well as all applicable federal and state laws.

REHEARSAL SCHEDULE/GUIDELINES:
SCHEDULE
1. Mass Choir – 3rd and 4th Tuesday.
2. The Grace Choir - Wednesday before 1st & 2nd Sundays.
3. The Youth/VOP – 1st & 2nd Tuesday before 3rd Sundays.
4. The Male Choir - Saturday before 3rd Sunday and Thursday before 4th Sunday.
5. The Mission Choir – no rehearsals unless called by lead musician/Chairperson of the Music Department.
6. Praise and Worship Choir – once a month as needed.

GUIDELINES
1. Regularly scheduled rehearsal times can be changed by a lead musician or the individual choir and the music department. The Music Director must also be notified of the change.
2. The presidents (lead matrons, in the case of either the Grace Choirs) of each of the affected choirs must be notified for any incidental changes to the rehearsal schedule.

SERVICE SCHEDULE:
10:00 am Service
1st Sunday: Mass
2nd Sunday: Grace Choir
3rd Sunday: Youth/Voice of Praise
4th Sunday: Male Choir
5th Sunday: Mission Choir

SPECIAL PROGRAMS AND ENGAGEMENTS:
1. At least one keyboard musician will be expected to play for all special programs, including those appearing in the church calendar, and/or otherwise sanctioned by the church, both at FMBC and away.
2. At least one keyboard musician must be available to play for funerals and will be paid $100 for each occurrence.

OUT OF TOWN/STATE ENGAGEMENTS:
1. The Music Director must be available to accompany assigned choirs for all engagements away from the church. For away engagements not on the church’s calendar, at least 1 week notice must be given to the appropriate musician.
2. The church will be responsible for lodging and travel expenses when travel is in excess of 60 miles one way. The church will be responsible for lodging, food and travel expenses when travel is in excess of 60 miles one way.
3. Musicians will not be reimbursed for travel expenses when church transportation is provided.

WORKSHOPS:
1. All musicians must be available to assist guest clinicians/musicians during any workshop sponsored by the church.
2. The Music Director will be allowed to attend a workshop, of choice and at the church’s reasonable expense, for enrichment with prior approval.

PERSONAL CODE OF CONDUCT:
1. First Missionary Baptist Church may terminate the Employee for any serious act of misconduct by Employee, including (but not limited to) any act of dishonesty, theft, or misappropriation of Church property; moral turpitude, insubordination, conviction of a felony or employment or drug related misdemeanor; or intoxication or being under the influence of a psychoactive substance when performing duties under this contract or when attending scheduled church events or appearances; written or spoken language that is offensive, obscene, or vulgar; or any act injuring, abusing, or endangering others.

SALARY:
1. The initial salary for this position will be $14,200 per year.
2. Unexcused absences for rehearsals and/or services will result in a reduction in pay. The reduction will be $100.00 per activity missed.
3. Three unexcused tardiness within a 30 day period will result in a $100 reduction in pay.
4. Musicians will be reimbursed for music (recorded and sheet) purchased for use with the Music Department. Prior approval by the Trustee representative is required.
5. Keyboard musicians should coordinate with each other to cover time off events. Contact trustee representative if a guest musician is required.
6. Time off:
a. For paid positions, 10 service/rehearsals days will be granted with pay, after 6 months of service.
b. No more than one musician can be on vacation at the same time.
c. All paid persons must submit a written request for leave to the Music Director 1 week prior to the desired time of leave. The Music Director must submit his request to the Trustee Representative.

TERM:
This job contract is renewable annually. This job has a 90-day probationary period for new employees.

TERMINATION OF AGREEMENT:
Either party, with a 14 day written notice, may terminate this agreement.
