Game Day Operations 2024-2025 Fall Internship

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join our game day operations team as a 2024-2025 Fall intern. The Game Day Operations Internship program will expose students to a variety of game-day roles and situations. This allows students to learn and work live alongside our front office staff members and departments on game days. Students will gain experience and exposure in various game day operations, including aspects of arena operations, entertainment, fan experience, team/sponsor marketing, sales, production, hospitality, fan engagement, and social media. The Game Day Operations Internship Program is designed to give students a stepping-stone experience working in professional sports.

Timeline:

The internship program will begin in mid-September 2024 and will conclude in late March 2025 (could possibly extend into April, depending on playoffs). Interns are expected to be committed to at least all 34 home games scheduled (100%), and we will work with you to receive school credit as needed. We are looking for qualified candidates who have availability on weekday games on Wednesday for example, and mainly Friday, Saturday, and Sunday afternoons/evenings.

Hours:

Game day report time is approximately 2 hours prior to doors opening (2:00 pm or 5:00 PM, for example) and will be dismissed shortly after the game ends when all responsibilities are finished alongside the post-game meeting, typically around 6:00 pm or 9:00 pm on the game nights.

Responsibilities:

  • Marketing in-game sponsored promotions and managing fan engagement interactions
  • Assist in the implementation and execution of all in-arena game presentation activities for the Flint Firebirds, including but not limited to promotions on and off the ice, anthems, color guard, pre and/or post-game ceremonies, intermission entertainment, handouts, and mascot duties for the Firebirds and special events outside of game nights
  • Supporting the guest services booth during game days, providing assistance to fans, and promoting team spirit
  • Work on the timely coordination of activities/setup with event staff, clients, other building departments, vendors, production staff, and show-related contractors.
  • Selecting participants and running the in-game promotions and contests to involve/showcase fans in the game experience
  • Managing fan data collection programs, running cash payments, and assisting with post-game jersey auctions
  • Assist with pre-game, in-game, and post-game operations, including concourse setup and breakdown before & after games
  • Complete various duties assigned by the director of game operations

Requirements:

• Currently enrolled or just graduated in a relevant degree program (sports management, event management, marketing, sales, operations, etc.)

• Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, communicate, and meet deadlines.

• Availability to work flexible hours and punctuality, including afternoons, evenings, weekends, and holidays.

• Can lift up to 25 pounds, comfortable working on ice surfaces, in loud environments, and with a lot of people.

• Passionate about sports and hockey and interested in game-day operations.

What We Offer:

• Hands-on experience in game-day operations and presentation for a professional sports team.

• Opportunities to network with industry professionals, build connections, and the ability to shadow game day operations and other departments alike.

• Game tickets (2 per game) and behind-the-scenes access

• Academic credit and/or equivalent

• Free food and drink during a shift

If you are a motivated and dedicated individual who wants to learn from our experienced staff and contribute to our game-day success, apply today! Please submit your resume. I look forward to reviewing your application!

-Paul Grattan (Director of Game Day Operations and Community Events)

*Please note: Interns must be able to receive credit for this internship or recent graduation-related field. Game Nights, office hours, and community events are unpaid. This is not a remote opportunity; you must be local or able to travel to Flint for this internship at the Dort Financial Center.
