What are the responsibilities and job description for the Disaster Recovery Coordinator position at Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church?

Essential Job Requirements:

  • An appreciation of the nature and mission of the Church is essential;
  • Completion of a disaster recovery case management specific curriculum;
  • Safety screening as evidenced by a background check;
  • Available to work a flexible schedule, including occasional evening and weekend hours to meet client availability;
  • Able to maintain ethical conduct in accordance with organizational policy;
  • Conduct business in a manner consistent with the mission, values and policies of the organization;
  • Able to maintain high standards for protecting client information, sharing confidential information only as agreed upon by the client and as evidenced by a signed release form;
  • Able to work calmly and effectively to resolve conflicts in sensitive situations; able to work collaboratively with others;
  • Computer literate, able to utilize word processing, database, and spreadsheet software and demonstrate ability to learn new and/or customized software;
  • Possess excellent communication skills: auditory, written and verbal;
  • Be organized and prepared for reports, meetings, briefings, and conversations with clients, staff and external partners;
  • Able to work without close supervision on assigned duties, and be willing to seek and accept supervision as needed;
  • Unquestioned confidentiality with sensitive financial and personal information;
  • Possess no outside business interest that may conflict with the client or the organization’s goals and objectives;
  • Demonstrate helpful inter-personal skills, such as:
  • Genuine care and respect for individuals, families, and communities served;
  • Awareness of the impact of the disaster on the community, the family and the individual;

  • Self-awareness
  • Active membership in a United Methodist Church is preferred but not required.
  • A minimum of an Associates Degree and no less than 6 years’ experience in managing Disaster Recovery staff and working with volunteer teams.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Guide and direct the work of the senior case workers, ensuring they understand their role and empowering them to perform the essential functions of their job while demonstrating compassion and sensitivity for both survivors and volunteers.
  • Work with the senior case workers to engage churches and volunteers in this project.
  • Develop a plan to track, compile and analyze data and information gathered through outreach.
  • Evaluate the information to make a recommendation to the DS and the CDRC regarding future long term recovery needs in the impacted communities.
  • Consult with senior case workers to answer questions, brainstorm solutions and ensure urgent survivor needs are being met through information and referral or direct services, if appropriate.
  • Engage staff in regular times of confidential sharing and debriefing to assist with healthy emotional and spiritual responses to the work and maintaining appropriate boundaries.
  • When needed, provide immediate assistance to resolve any problems that come up between the volunteers and staff or survivors/clients.
  • Work in cooperation and partnership with local community partners and local churches to coordinate work and avoid duplication.
  • Communicate regularly with the DS and CDRC to keep them informed of progress on the project.
  • Seek assistance from the DS and/or the CDRC when needed to manage challenges.
  • Provide a recommendation to the DS and the CDRC about probable project outcome and whether another, longer project may be needed to help survivors recover in the impacted communities.
  • Quantify the size and scope of need so that the CDRC can determine the resources needed if the recommendation is to continue the project.

Working Conditions:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle to be able to drive long distances in all areas within the services’ area.
  • Constant interaction with internal and external third parties for the purpose of collecting and distributing information.
  • Adaptability to environmental factors, including noises, odors, variable climate, etc.
  • Spends over 80% of time sitting; remainder of time includes walking, standing;
  • Occasional lifting (5 - 10 lbs) and climbing stairs

Must work cooperatively and collaboratively with colleagues, clients and other agencies involved in the recovery.

Pay: $60,442.00 - $78,574.00 per year
