Mental Health Counselor

Four Winds * Westward Ho is looking for a Mental Health Counselor to join our summer 2024 team! Four Winds is a traditional summer camp located on Orcas Island. We offer children ages 9 through 15 a chance to unplug, make lasting connections, and explore their independence while enjoying the beauty of the San Juans. Each session is four weeks long.

At camp, we strive to create an environment where children and young adults can thrive. After the pandemic, we noticed an increased need for mental health support. As a result, we hired our first mental health counselor in 2021 and immediately realized how much their presence benefited our community.

As the Mental Health Counselor, you will carry a radio and be on call, ready to respond to situations such as extreme homesickness, general anxiety, or complex behavioral issues. We believe children deserve respect and empathy; it is important to us that our counselor approaches each case with sensitivity, care, and a lack of judgement. Additionally, you will be a resource for our counselors, for both their own mental health, and to help guide them in leading their cabins.

Campers agree to an Essential Eligibility Criteria before their arrival. We use this agreement to ensure that children are ready to be away from home and comfortably cohabitate with others. As the Mental Health Counselor, you will communicate with the parents of children who need extra care and reference our EEC. You will also work closely with our camp Nurse in coordinating care.

Our Mental Health Counselor lives in a private room in a house with heating and electricity. There is a bathroom in the home as well as a living room. Two other staff members will live the adjacent bedroom. All meals are provided.

This is a paid position that offers competitive compensation based on experience. The ideal candidate would have a Masters in Social Work. We are open to a candidate working towards their degree who has a wealth of experience in mental health settings.
