ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Draws blood from patients or donors in Nursing Home facility for analysis or other medical purposes: Assembles equipment, such as tourniquet, needles, and disposable containers for needles, blood collection devices, gauze, cotton, and alcohol on work tray, according to requirements for specified tests or procedures
- Verifies test requisitions by comparing information with nursing station log; bringing discrepancies to the attention of unit personnel
- Verifies or records identity of patient or donor and converses with patient or donor to allay fear of procedure
- Applies tourniquet to arm, locates accessible vein, swabs puncture area with antiseptic, and inserts needle into vein to draw blood into collection tube or bag
- Withdraws needle, applies treatment to puncture site, and labels and stores blood container for
- May prick finger to draw blood
- Follow the laboratory procedure for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient test results
- Adhere to the laboratory quality control policies; document all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and maintenance performed
- Follow established policies and procedures whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance
- Maintains specimen integrity by using aseptic technique, following department procedures; observing isolation procedures
- Tracks collected specimens by initialing, dating, and noting times of collection; maintaining daily tallies of collections performed
- Monitors glucose levels by performing bedside glucose tests; recording results; reporting results to unit nurse-manager
- Maintains quality results by following department procedures and testing schedule; recording results in the quality-control log; identifying and reporting needed changes
- Maintains safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures; complying with legal regulations
- Resolves unusual test orders by contacting the physician, pathologist, nursing station, or reference laboratory; referring unresolved orders back to the originator for further clarification; notifying
- Serves and protects the hospital community by adhering to professional standards, hospital policies and procedures, federal, state, and local requirements, and jcaho standards
- All other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Director
Work Experience: Phlebotomy experience desirable. Clinic or hospital experience desired.
