Treatment Plant Laborer
Job Summary:
This position performs a variety of entry level, general labor, semi-skilled and skilled duties
related to the operation, maintenance, and repair of wastewater treatment equipment to
ensure efficient operation of plant components and efficient processing of influent raw sewage.
Work Environment:
With safety controls in place, there will be:
Potential exposure to hazardous conditions such as working on high ladders and in
manholes.
Potential for hazardous exposure to methane, hydrogen sulfide, chlorine gases, sodium
bisulfate, acids and other chemicals.
Potential for hazardous exposure to oxygen deficient atmosphere; exposure to seasonal
changes and weather extremes.
Potential for hazardous exposure to electrical shock, industrial wastes and raw sewage
(containing pathogens such as typhoid, paratyphoid, dysentery, polio, tetanus, etc.)
Potential exposure to moving parts and equipment such as pumps, motors, heavy
equipment, etc.
Potential exposure to stressful environmental conditions such as dust, fumes,
dampness, cold, heat and noise.
Physical requirements:
Often required to work non-traditional working hours which include weekends, holidays, and
nights. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, run, talk and hear. The
employee is occasionally required to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, controls,
or tools. Must be able to reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or
crawl, and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move more than 50 pounds.
Essential Job Functions:
As a laborer, performs general routine facilities and grounds upkeep and maintenance; cleans
buildings, equipment; performs treatment plant upkeep, mowing lawns, snow removal, etc.;
performs interior and exterior painting.
May operate equipment as needed.(Trucks, plows, snow blowers, lawn mowers, etc.)
In a learning capacity:
Assists in treatment plant processes and operations, i.e., plant electrical and mechanical
support systems to ensure optimum performance.
Checks all equipment, i.e. electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and biological to
ensure proper operation.
Operates and maintains plant support systems to include headworks fine screens, grit
removal equipment, sludge pumps, heat exchangers, sludge dewatering equipment,
clarifiers, aeration equipment, digesters, chlorination and metering equipment.
Maintains emergency power generation equipment, and all associated valves, pumps,
motors, and control circuitries.
Monitors alarm systems.
Assists with sample collection from various stages of the treatment process.
Assists with calibrating gauges, meters and measuring devices.
Performs some laboratory tests, such as chlorine residual analysis.
Uses mathematical calculations.
Performs and assists with maintenance and repair of plant equipment.
When required, implements emergency repairs and procedures.
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or equivalency.
No specific experience necessary.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Some knowledge of mechanical equipment, machinery and its operation, maintenance and
repair; hazards and precautions associated with plant operations and processes is a plus.
Ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; ability to operate a variety of hand
and power tools related to the maintenance of plant facilities and equipment; ability to develop
working relationships with supervisors and co-workers.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid Maine driver’s license. CDL and endorsements are a plus.

Principal Tasks
Assist Operator(s) in attending the following tasks:
Assist with control and monitor the biological treatment process
Prepare daily reports and daily logs detailing plant operation
Perform laboratory analyses
Take samples for analysis
Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot electrical controls
Mark sewer lines according to DigSafe specifications including work in the streets
Perform routine servicing and cleaning of plant, pipes, and equipment
Operate pumps, motors, blowers
Check meters, gauges, pumps, and control panels to verify correct operation of
equipment and records information.
Monitor and repair plant equipment including cleaning and servicing digesters,clarifiers
and contact tanks performing annual inspections.
Attend training as necessary.
Perform grounds maintenance and minor routine PM of all Department vehicles and
equipment.
In an on call rotation that includes weekend duties. On call to respond to emergencies and
breakdowns in the plant.
Repair, inspect sewer lines, valves, manholes and pump stations
Perform other duties as apparent or assigned
Show thorough knowledge of and compliance with the contents of the Freeport Sewer
District handbook
Degree of Supervision:
Position requires independent thinking on assigned tasks, involving multiple, shifting priorities.
Ability to work as a team member is essential. Reports to and evaluated by the Superintendent
and General Manager.
Requirements of Work:
Must obtain a Grade I Biological Maine Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator License within 18
months of date of hire.
Must obtain
a Grade I Wastewater Collection Systems Operator Certificate within 18 months of date of hire.
Training and Experience Required:
High school graduate or equivalent and adequate experience in a treatment plant; or any
equivalent combination of experience and training.
