Description
REQUIRED: High school diploma; Experience with outside plant network facilities and understanding of fiber optic cable design. Excellent working knowledge of personal computers; Understanding of Windows operating systems and Microsoft Office applications; Detail oriented.
DESIRED: Associates Degree in Engineering or related field. Two years of fiber optic design experience (preferably RUS); Working knowledge of GIS Mapping utilizing Esri, AutoCad, or equivalent computer aided drafting software; Understanding of printers, plotters, digitizers and related CAD hardware and software.
Qualifications
I. OBJECTIVE
To design outside plant facilities to meet existing and new subscriber requirements. The Plant Designer shall follow FTC’s Best Practices for Plant Design and interface with Outside Plant Personnel and others in Corporate Engineering to achieve goals set by the Plant Design Supervisor.
II. REPORTING RELATIONSHIP
A. Reports to: Plant Design Supervisor
III. MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
A. Personally performs the following activities unique to this position:
1. Provides assistance to the Engineering Consultants and Associate Plant Designers in the implementation and completion of outside plant designs through GIS software.
2. Coordinates Outside Plant Projects through FTC Best Practices steps:
- Planning/Design
- Approval
- Staking
- Permitting
- Construction
- Assignment of counts
- Splicing
- Testing
- Posting
- Closeout
- Quality Control
3. Works with IS Personnel to develop an understanding of the FTC GIS system. Provides technical and procedural support of the FTC GIS system to others in Corporate Engineering, Marketing, Sales etc. Capable of training and advising existing and new users on the system.
4. Coordinates AM/FM requirements for design and other mapping functions with IS Personnel, District Engineering, Marketing, Sales and other departments, as necessary.
5. Assists in the development and improvement of the AM/FM GIS system relating to the design of outside plant facilities.
6. Designs outside plant facilities using copper cable additions, fiber optic cable additions, electronic carrier additions and other plant facilities as directed.
7. Manages the maintenance of a system-wide outside plant fill and identifies areas where cables require reinforcement.
8. Works with District Engineering on design projects. Ensures that staking plan adequately follows Corporate Engineering design. Assigns cable counts, serving areas, preferred counts, route numbers, etc., and ensures that these items are implemented according to FTC Best Practices.
9. Completes outside plant designs by commitment dates and forwards to supervisor for approval and implementation.
10. Continually researches new outside plant design methods and makes recommendations to supervisor on deployment or necessary training.
11. Complies with all safety rules and regulations.
12. Performs other duties as directed.
