Data Scientist

Provide services as a Data Scientist in support of the overall functions of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) within the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This position will support efforts by the NIEHS Office of Data Science to advance the application of scientific data towards improving public health by developing and applying systems and tools for capturing, organizing, analyzing, and visualizing biomedical research data.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Use analytic methods to solve real world problems.
• Apply a variety of statistical and computational techniques to solve complex analytic problems.
• Develop scientific web- and data-centric applications for collecting, processing, managing, analyzing, and visualizing scientific data.
• Deploy web and software applications to servers, including on Linux systems using Docker.
• Support the development and customization of scientific data and knowledge management systems.
• Develop scientific applications using R, Shiny and/or Python. Develop web applications to Linux servers.
• Deploy applications to systems; manage library dependencies. Analyze and write statistical computer code.
• Collaborate with staff to develop, test, refine and apply advanced statistical and computational methods.
• Maintain and monitor applications, databases, or software tools. Test and install the software updates.
• Collaborate with staff to develop database application and tools for supporting bioinformatics and scientific computing research projects.
• Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to detail all steps and activities carried out for all aspects of the program data management.
• Provide feasibility studies and research for compatibility and ease of scientific databases use by researchers for extensive scientific data analyses.
• Provide written technical descriptions of implemented algorithms; contribute to the publication of the lab’s software and research.
• Prepare roadmaps, schedules, status reports, plans and recommendations.

• Design, develop and deploy software for multi-core and high-performance computing systems.
• Develop new code and refine/troubleshoot existing code.
• Troubleshoot scripts and programs to ensure successful use of said scripts and programs. Document in-house software for training and reference purposes.
• Provide support for development of methods in data science.
• Work with staff on literature reviews of analytic methods that have been applied across a broad range of scientific fields in order to identify the most useful methods to be applied.
• Implement improvements to development activities to speed development of applications, databases, or software tools.
• Plan, build and maintain applications to meet end users need.
• Work with investigators to design the prototypes and implement the systems to support various in-house research projects.
• Develop new code and refine/troubleshoot existing code.
• Troubleshoot scripts and programs to ensure successful use of said scripts and programs. Document in-house software for training and reference purposes.
• Develop and implement new or major revisions to applications, databases, or software tools.
• Implement improvements to development activities to speed development of applications, databases, or software tools.

• Work with staff to improve efficiency of the current data processing by creating new programming approaches. 1
• Participate in relational database schema design and engineering in order to optimize performance and flexibility. 2
• Write custom code in scripting language for the automation of data transfer, storage, and backup. 3
• Work with staff on data retrieval from various data sources. 4

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in biology, computer science, information sciences, statistics and decision science, or a related discipline.
• One year of relevant data science experience.
• Skilled in JavaScript, Python, HTML5, and Linux.
• Knowledge of scientific data analysis, data visualization, machine learning, data annotation, and data cleaning.

• Excellent analytical, organizational and time management skills.
• Strong communication skills, both oral and written.
