Position Objective: Provide services as a Communications Manager in support of the overall functions of the Vaccine Research Center (VRC), Office of the Scientific Director (OSD) within the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID).
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with NIH scientific and administrative leadership and NIAID Divisions and groups to increase the effectiveness of communications strategies and services in meeting the needs and requirements of the Institute.
- Coordinate high level, collaborative projects with internal and external organizations, serving as the VRC’s point of contact.
- Provide operational coordination of and support for collaborative assignments involving broad design, production, and photography services, including the development of publications, marketing materials, signage, advertising and external content review, logo use and policy, branding development and related special initiatives.
- Support the development and management of responses to media inquiries, interview requests, press releases, and public relations needs that increase the effectiveness of visual and written communications products for the VRC.
- Prepare briefing materials and complex scientific summaries on a broad range of diseases and research areas that focus on VRC activities.
- Develop specialized materials covering highly complex subject matter areas for various purposes and audiences.
- Provide advice and conduct reviews of materials prepared by other NIAID division staff.
- Develop scientific and technical materials regarding VRC’s research programs and activities as well as scientific accomplishments.
- Identify tools/software to improve operations in committee and meeting management areas.
- Perform quality control assessments on all outbound written responses. Ensure documents are prepared in accordance with office policies and procedures, including reviewing, revising, and editing as needed. Ensure responses conform to applicable regulations, style manuals, and publication standards. Review and analyze documents for logical, well organized structure.
- Check and verify information for accuracy and consistency using a broad variety of Internet sources such as PubMed, Medline, and other Web sites and search engines.
- Act as an information resource to other health communications specialists in developing comprehensive and appropriate responses to mail, telephone, fax, and email inquiries from the public.
Basic Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in a related scientific discipline. Three (3) years of specialized experience plus a Bachelor’s degree is equivalent to a Master’s degree.
- Minimum of one (1) year of experience in related scientific or communications field.
- Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel).
Minimum Qualifications:
- Demonstrated strong writing, editing and proofreading skills.
- Demonstrated experience in writing and summarizing scientific content.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate basic scientific ideas to the general public.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing, with non-technical and technical staff.
- Detail-oriented and possess strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize multiple tasks and projects
