Gare Inc. of Haverhill, MA has been a profitable, family owned and operated business since it was started in 1950 and is a worldwide leader in the Paint-Your-Own-Pottery (PYOP) Market. This candidate will be training 3 to 5 days a week under our Staff Artist (Mary Ann O’hearn / AKA The Boston Potta’). The Assistant Artist will work in conjunction with our staff artist, in-house sculptor, and the marketing team to design and paint ceramic bisque.
Experience and Skills Preferred:
- Some ceramics experience a plus, but ideally, we are looking for an artist to develop and train for this position. A diamond in the rough - the ideal candidate is highly creative, artistic and a fast learner.
- Ability to see a project through from ideation to creation with a fast and accurate turn around.
- Well-rounded artistic ability, including strong sense of design, color, and composition. Versatile with the ability to create a broad range of designs and looks using our fired and non-fired color products.
- Strong interest in home décor and/or gift market to keep current with upcoming trends and help in developing designs that are fresh and exciting.
- Ability to use a combination of creativity, trend analysis and understanding of what the customer likes to develop new beautiful, easy-to-replicate designs that will excite our studios and their customers.
- Innovative & resourceful with the ability to think and maneuver around potential/ or existing issues to meet hard deadlines.
- Strong communication skills to be able to help customers on the phone with questions concerning technique, customer projects and product problems.
- Strong organizational skills to juggle various projects in a high quality, timely manner.
- Proactive, energetic, highly motivated and have good communication skills.
- Teaching experience with a style that is both engaging, fun and informative.
- Ability to communicate and work well with others in a team environment as well as with other suppliers and customers.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office. Photoshop and/or being able to show design concepts digitally is a plus.
- Comfortable responding to Social Media posts and questions.
- Willingness to participate (on screen) in training, how-to videos, and photographs
- Willingness to travel when needed.
Principle Duties & Responsibilities:
- Reports directly to the Marketing Manager.
- Using a combination of creativity, trend analysis and an understanding of customer needs/wants, responsible for painting/designing high quality, easy-to-do designs in a timely fashion. Responsible for typing instructions in timely fashion.
- Work closely with Marketing Manager to understand overall marketing plans for classes, project plans, website, social media, and email newsletters to develop the right techniques for each.
- A key liaison to the studios for all quality, technical and design questions. Answer questions promptly, and effectively and communicate findings/actions to the appropriate people(s)/department(s).
- Responsible for knowing the needs and challenges of the contemporary market, an understanding of our key competitors and their products and keeping up on current trends. Responsible for maintaining knowledge of our product line versus the competition and the pros/cons of each and communicating updates to key team members/departments.
- Responsible for the preparations and set-up of the Gare booth for trade shows as well as Gare events and teaching functions.
- Responsible for testing and quality control of all new colors/products.
- Must maintain an orderly work area, as well as create inviting displays throughout the Gare facility showcasing our products.
- Willingness and ability to travel to studios and events throughout the year to gain knowledge of the industry and attend teaching events.
