Description
Gelest, Inc, part of the Mitsubishi Chemical Group, is currently seeking a qualified candidate to join our small-scale R&D Process Development team as a Research and Development Manager for our Silanes group.
Qualified applicants will be expectd to supervise and lead research chemists in the organosilicon laboratory. Plan, develop, and perform the syntheses of standard, custom, or research organosilicon compounds. Interact with Commercial and Operations to ensure that the R&D objectives are coordinated with corporate objectives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
Supervises and evaluates the performance of research chemists.
Develops processes for the syntheses of various organosilicon compounds.
Suggests and develops new products in response to trends in the market and ideas from the literature.
Coordinates scheduling of catalog, custom and R&D organosilicon products with R&D planner.
Supports the development of analytical protocols for the organosilicon and metal-organic compounds.
Responds to organosilicon technical service calls.
Interacts with Process Technology and Production in the scale-up of organosilicon preparations.
Competency: Demonstrates strong laboratory and supervisory skills along with strong interaction with Operation and Product Management. Demonstrates the ability to use the chemical literature to generate new ideas, products, and synthetic routes. Shows ability to resolve problems in a timely manner. Shows ability and desire to generate data for presentations, publications, and patents. Coordinates projects and participates in the training of others. Communicates effectively to colleagues and management.

Qualifications
Education/Experience: Ph.D. in chemistry with practical experience in the synthesis and analysis of metal-organic systems. 3 years of experience managing a team with diverse technical background.
Language Ability: Ability to read, analyze and fully understand professional chemical and related journals and patents, technical procedures, and Safety Data Sheets. Ability to communicate instructions to coworkers, write technical reports, develop and make technical presentations, write drafts of patents and technical publications.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to absorb and analyze facts and data and put it to use in the improvements of reactions and the operation. Ability to gather and apply information towards the solution of a problem.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises the activities of research chemists. Is responsible for providing the details of the chemical reactions to be run and the equipment to be used. Is responsible for the continual employee development activities of direct reports.
