Job Summary

Groundskeeper II is a skilled employee handling a wide variety of motorized equipment and manual labor performing grounds maintenance and landscape duties.

Maintaining the safety, cleanliness,

and aesthetics of the campus.

Responsibilities

Operating Equipment - 40

Safely Operate motorized landscaping equipment such as trucks with trailer, golf carts, riding zero turn mowers, blowers, weed eaters, edger, vacuums, aerators, rototillers, and other similar types of equipment.

Responsible for safely, efficiently, and effectively utilizing equipment to perform the tasks they are assigned and trained to perform.

Maintenance - Manual Labor - 25

Perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in landscape maintenance of a zone of campus.

Digging, planting, raking, mulching (pine straw or bark chips), weeding, laying sod, picking up trash, hauling off debris, backpack spraying, watering, fertilizing, and similar tasks.

Complete written or verbal assignments received for manual labor tasks and perform tasks to the trained standard of completion.

Responsible for transporting tools to and from work sites, performing the task, and reporting back to the supervisor.

Maintenance - Complex Manual Labor - 15

More complex labor tasks associated with specific plants or turf.

Ability to handle proper styles of pruning, chain sawing trees, identifying plants, chemical knowledge, as well as sprayer and calibration knowledge and use.

How to use Z- spray Z- plug, and other equipment for spraying.

Communication - 10

Communication is verbal or written Instructions are received daily / throughout day / weekly.

Ability to communicate in a respectful and cooperative manner in a varied environment.

Communicate appropriately utilizing radio, e-mails, and iPhone.

Written communications and written logs of recording plants or chemicals required.

Some computerized experience is needed for online e-mails, annual trainings, timecards, and benefits information. (training for computerized requirements is assisted internally)

Compliance - 10

Safety training is provided to make you aware of hazardous conditions and train you to protect yourself, constituents, and equipment from safety hazards.

Employees must follow safety standards for a more complex range of equipment and tasks.

Ability to maintain awareness of safety requirements for all conditions including weather, chemicals, terrain variances around students and faculty and their own physical safety.

Required Qualifications

Educational Requirements

High School Diploma or Equivalent.

Other Required Qualifications

Experience with zero turn Mowers, weedeating, edging, blowing, and similar maintenance requirements.

Required Experience

Minimum of 3 years of Grounds Maintenance experience with mowing equipment experiences. Or will consider similar experience with plant nursery, farming, golf course maintenance, or sports field maintenance.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Experience

Five plus years of prior grounds maintenance experience with commercial company handling grounds maintenance, including equipment use.

OR five years with landscaping company, golf

course maintenance, plant nursery, or farming with equipment.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

ABILITIES

Ability to safely perform complex physical and manual tasks requiring balance, dexterity, eye hand coordination, as well as multi-tasking while utilizing and operating equipment.

Ability to visually identify plants and details when taught as well as detailed landscape techniques.

The ability to push, pull and or lift 25 lbs. consistently and 50 lbs. occasionally and to perform constant manual labor.

Ability to safely operate equipment and performs labor under adverse working conditions, outdoor environment, and varying terrains.

Employees work in heat, cold, wind, rain, and inclement weather.)

Ability to work and interact with a varied team or alone as needed. Ability to act responsibly, reasonably, and respectfully.

KNOWLEDGE

Knowledge on the safe operation of the basic groundskeeping and landscaping techniques and equipment.

Knowledge to learn to identify plants, pruning practices, equipment usage and teamwork interactions.

Knowledge of communications skills needed to interact co-operatively and exchange information.

Knowledge on proper teamwork communication, interactions, cooperation, and etiquette. Specifically considering a varied environment.

Knowledge on reading assigned materials, work orders, lists, safety notices, MSDS or other literature as needed. Knowledge of basic math.

Basic computer skills required for the use of e-mails, ADP timecards, or leave requests, annual trainings, and testing.

SKILLS

Skill to properly operate equipment to the effectiveness and skill required for task.

Skill of awareness and focus to be able to multi-task while utilizing equipment and looking for safety issues.

Skill and strength to be able to effectively use and handle tools and body mechanics necessary to efficiently perform basic and standard tasks in grounds maintenance;

as well as coordination to operate all equipment.

Skill and strength or ability to push, pull and or lift 25 lbs. consistently and 50 lbs. occasionally.
