What are the responsibilities and job description for the Tool and Die Maker position at GKN Sinter Metals?
Summary of Function:
Plan, lay out, and perform all bench and machine operations to construct, alter and repair intricately designed and constructed tools, dies, fixtures, molds, gauges, machine attachments and mechanisms.
Requirements: (Education, Experience - or equivalents)
- Completion of state-qualified apprenticeship program or equivalent work experience with general education including verbal and written communication and technical math.
- Ability to perform difficult/technical calculations with decimals and fractions, use and interpret a wide variety of precision measuring instruments for exacting measurements, work from complicated drawings and specifications.
- Consistently demonstrate a high degree of skill and extensive knowledge of tooling practices and applications; set up, adjust, and operate machine shop equipment.
- Strong inter-personal skills needed to effectively train, guide, and support others in performing their duties and responsibilities. Ability to effectively organize work flow and set priorities in accordance with established procedures and daily instructions.
ESSENTIAL Functions:
- Lay out work and plan machining and bench procedures. Train lower skilled tool makers on operations and procedures.
- Perform difficult machining operations requiring complicated set ups involving the improvising of tooling and machines for adaptations beyond the normal range and capacities of available equipment.
- Perform critical bench and assembly operations to fit, align, adjust, assemble and finish work.
- Ability to create standard work process/procedure when called upon (process should enable “right first time results”)
- Ability to establish inspection methods to ensure in process conformance to print spec
OTHER Functions:
- May act as Lead Person on any given tooling project, allocating work to tool room personnel specializing in various areas of machining and bench operations.
- Occasionally do development and experimental work, select allowances and materials, proceed from own conception in absence of design and specifications.
- Assist others with material handling tasks; maintain safe, neat and orderly work areas.
- Perform other tasks or duties as may be assigned.
Accountable for: quality workmanship and dimensional accuracy of assigned work in accordance with established procedures and standards; properly trained and informed personnel.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, squat, bend, twist, crawl, kneel and climb.
- Ability to lift at least 50 lbs. frequently and 75-100 lbs. occasionally.
- Repetitive use of hands for simple grasping, pushing, pulling, and fine manipulation.
- Excellent vision and depth perception.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work performed in machine shop environment. Minor exposure to heat, noise, dust and dirt, grease, oils, and metal treating solutions, moving machinery and equipment, electrical power. Personal protective equipment required in designated areas.
