The Mechanical Engineer is a mid-level role for mechanical engineering personnel at Global Riser. The position encompasses a fast-track program of knowledge and performance with regards to Offshore Drilling Riser and associated well control equipment as well as Global Riser’s systems and processes. The Mechanical Engineer will be an enthusiastic, efficient, committed individual with a strong background in engineering theory, design, project management, manufacturing, and practical work experience, who can think practically and innovatively. The employee will interact with Customers, Suppliers, Field Service Engineers, Technicians, Management and Consultants. The Mechanical Engineer will work closely with other engineering personnel predominantly based in South Africa. The Mechanical Engineer will also be expected to work unsupervised and will be required to supervise other GR personnel.

Job Description

  • Oversee multiple projects, including your own and provide guidance.
  • Mentor junior mechanical engineers and technicians.
  • Maintain a high level of safety ethic and always ensure a safe working environment.
  • Initially, shadow Project & Mechanical Engineers, Field Service Technicians and Subsea Engineers to gain a fundamental understanding of the design, operation, inspection and repair of Capital Drilling Equipment as well as all the processes, procedures, etc. of the Company.
  • Conduct in-house design and development, which will be the primary function within the role ( /-70%), including strength calculations (from first principles and FEA/Simulation when required), 3D CAD modelling and drawing using SolidWorks, manufacturing data pack generation (incl. BOM’s, QCP’s, Works Instructions, Manuals) and vendor management during fabrication stage.
  • Physically participate in carrying out inspection and maintenance processes to gain a fundamental understanding of them.
  • Manage Projects (Service, Repair, Manufacture, Design, CEM, Product etc.), which will be the secondary function within the role ( /-30%) from inception through to delivery; ensuring adherence to company policies and procedures. This will include, but will not be limited to: quotation, project execution, procurement, logistics, resource planning, scheduling, reporting, inspection report review & dispositions, databook generation and submission, oversight, manufacture, quality control and project closeout.
  • Giving expert technical advice to Technicians and coaching new Technicians.
  • Monitor compliance to applicable codes, practices, QC policies, procedures and specifications.
  • Detailed reporting and inspection report reviews; as well as regularly report and feedback to Management and the Customer on the progress of project.
  • Review engineering deliverables and initiate appropriate corrective actions; draft new procedures as required.
  • Ensure safe work practices are being adhered to at all times.


Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited College or University.
  • 4 – 6 Years’ Experience in relatable engineering environment, Oil & Gas, Design, Development and Manufacturing experience will be advantageous.
  • Professional registration(PE) would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of 3D CAD packages, in particular SolidWorks would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of FEA Software, in particular SolidWorks Simulation would be advantageous.
  • Sound understanding of Engineering Calculations Software, in particular Mathcad, MATLAB or similar would be advantageous.
  • Exposure to ASME, API and Class Rules (ABS & DNV) in respect of design, development and manufacture would be advantageous.
  • Excellent level of English, both written and verbal.
  • Sound understanding of fabrication, boiler making/welding, precision machining.
  • Excellent organizational, planning & time management skills.
  • An advanced knowledge of the MS Office suite (especially Word, Excel, Teams).
  • Excellent written communicator (email, technical report writing, WhatsApp etc.).
  • Must be born in America.
