ASD Categorical Teacher

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Hold a Bachelor or Master Degree in Special Education from an accredited college or university.
  • Hold a Temporary Approval (MARSE MCL340.1783) or valid teaching certificate (MARSE R340.1782) from the Michigan Department of Education in accordance with any of the following requirements: MCL340.1786 (Cognitive Impairment (SA)), or MCL340.1787 (Emotional Impairment (SE)), or MCL340.1788 (Learning Disability (SM)), or MCL340.1799 (Autism Spectrum Disorder (SV)).
  • Is eligible for or meeting the requirements of emergency certification through the Michigan Department of Education.

§ Demonstrates excellent integrity, good moral character and initiative.

§ Demonstrates knowledge and understanding of child growth and development, learning assessment and diagnosis, the needs and demands of the classroom professional and research related to learning, instructional strategies, and classroom management.

§ Demonstrates an understanding of current rules and regulations regarding Multitiered Systems of Support and special education assessment and program requirements.

§ Exhibits a personality that demonstrates enthusiasm and the interpersonal skills to relate well with students, staff, administration, parents, and the community.

§ Demonstrates the ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing.

§ Demonstrates proficiency in Student Information System, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.

REPORTS TO: Director of Student Services

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide instructional and educational support services to special education students.
  • Participate as a team member in child study, MET meetings and IEPC’s.
  • Evaluate and assess academic levels of functioning of special education students for IEPC and MET meetings.
  • Provide consultant services to special education students, parents, and other staff members.
  • Assume responsibility for convening and attending IEPC’s within appropriate timelines for all students on caseload.
  • Write goals and objectives for each student as mandated by Federal, State and County agencies.
  • Provide input to building administrators regarding appropriate classes for the inclusion of special education students.
  • Facilitate inclusion of special education students through ongoing communication with the general education staff.
  • Assume responsibilities mandated to the special education teacher as a member of the IEPC process.
  • Attendance at meetings set up by general and special education administration.
  • Full-time staff in a single building will assume the same responsibilities as do the general education teachers within the building and as per teacher contract.
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with school and community (parents and agencies).
  • Maintain the philosophy and procedures of Least Restrictive Environment for special education students.
  • Maintain flexibility necessary for meeting the individual needs of students with varying disabilities.
  • Promote a positive learning environment for special education students.
  • Keep current knowledge of legal mandates regarding special education.

§ Help in ensuring smooth transition of students from one level of education to another with proper guidance.

§ The teacher should be willing and able to help at all times.

§ The teacher should be dependable and possess a cooperative attitude

§ The teacher should have in-depth knowledge of program administration consistent with MARSE Rules.

§ Have strong knowledge of laws that guide education within the work area.

§ 2-4 years of relevant experience in a similar advisory role, preferably in an educational system

Upon recommendation for employment, Section 1230g, as amended, of the Revised School Code requires all school employees to be electronically fingerprinted for the purpose of undergoing a criminal history background check. The fingerprinting is conducted by a third party and is at the expense of the applicant. Cost for fingerprinting is approximately $70.00.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: In accordance with the Hamtramck Federation of Teachers collective bargaining agreement.
