Seeking a Director of Music
The Grosse Pointe Unitarian Universalist Church (www.gpuuc.org) is seeking a part-time (8-10 hrs./week) Director of Music (DOM) to begin in September 2024. We are a liberal religious community celebrating all ages, family structures, ethnicities, sexual orientations, gender and spiritual identities. Our DOM provides vital leadership in making music a cohesive part of congregational life.
Current Music Program
The GPUC music program currently includes: Sunday morning worship services (choral anthems, hymns, meditations, instrumental pieces, etc.), a choir of approximately 10 people, holiday and special music Sundays, accompaniment, and coordination of individual musical talents. Our music program great potential for growth and new programming.
Our ideal Director of Music will have:
Ø The ability to coordinate, direct, and grow a music program.
Ø Experience as a church musician — as well as deep knowledge of classical and contemporary repertoire and conducting.
Ø Mastery with piano (preferable is the ability to sight-read.)
Ø The ability to work creatively with singers and instrumentalists with a wide range of musical experience and personalities.
Ø Be enthusiastic and dedicated with a commitment to serving the church community.
Ø Reliable leadership at choir rehearsal and Sunday service.
Ø Willingness to attend staff and committee meetings, and UU Musicians Network conferences.
Ø Have excellent interpersonal skills including the patience, clarity, and ease of communication necessary to work well with staff and volunteer members.
Ø The ability to manage a schedule, be punctual with responsibilities, and responsive to communication.
Ø The willingness to oversee and develop the music library.
Preference will be given to those familiar with Unitarian Universalist traditions and music; proficient with diverse musical styles; and who have an understanding of and sensitivity to the cultural use of music.
Time and Compensation:
Our Director of Music contract is for 10 months (September – June), approximately 8-10 hours a week. The DOM would be expected to be part of most Sunday worships and coordinate a substitute when needed. Choir rehearses weekly for ninety minutes. Compensation range is an annual: $10-18k depending on scope of work and ability. Additionally, use of studio space for private lessons may be negotiated as part of employee package.
