Description: The Grout Museum is a non-profit organization dedicated to collecting, maintaining, exhibiting, and educating about the history of Black Hawk County, Iowa. The museum assets include the Grout Museum of History and Science, Sullivan Brothers Iowa Veteran Museum, Carl A. & Peggy J. Bluedorn Science Imaginarium, Rensselar Russell House Museum and Snowden House.

The Executive Director provides central organization for the Grout Museum, always working toward the goals of the Mission and Vision Statements.

Job Responsibilities

Daily Tasks:

· Develop and implement a cost-effective marketing plan

· Oversee the maintenance and effectiveness of social media (website, Facebook, etc.)

· Act as the chief spokesperson of the Grout Museum, cooperating and coordinating with the community groups and organizations as appropriate and maintaining a highly visible presence in the Cedar Valley.

· Support the Trustees/Board of Directors in developing and implementing policies, procedures, budgets, and programs. Collaborate with and support the Trustees/Board of Directors in the development of a well-functioning and engaged Board.

· Implement all policies and directives as set forth by the Trustees/Board. Responsible for regular communication and feedback with the Trustee/Board providing sufficient and up-to-date information that will assist the Trustees/Board in its decision-making process.

· Knowledge of and ability to lead the Grout Museum in progressive museum management strategies; historic preservation, exhibits and archiving.

· Maintain strong professional connections within the historic museum community.

· Work with development committee to develop plans, objectives and strategies to build and maintain a strong membership base.

As the Executive Director you will work collaboratively with different committees on the Board regarding the following initiatives:

· Human Resources Committee: Overseeing staffing activities of the organization, including recruiting, selecting, training, supervising, and evaluation of staff.

· Development Committee: Overseeing all fund development planning and implementation, including identifying resource requirements, researching funding sources (i.e. capital/annual fund campaigns, major gift acquisition, memorial and planned giving, fundraising, grants), establishing prospect strategies, managing donor relations, and overseeing fundraising records and documentation.

· Finance Committee: Monitoring financial performance, monitoring cash flows, and providing required reports to the Board.

· Budget Committee: Overseeing the creation of the annual budget in collaboration with Trustees/selected board members.

· Strategic Platform: Developing and implementing short- and long-term organizational goals and strategic plans,

· Governance: Ensure local, state, and federal compliance with all not-for-profit regulations; Assure annual report is prepared and distributed to membership.

· Exhibit Committee: Overseeing the scheduling and funding sources for exhibits.

· Executive Committee: Overseeing coordination of meetings and setting the monthly board meeting agenda.

· Collections Committee: Overseeing the processing of donated items and articles to accessioning or deaccessioning.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

· Minimum 4-year degree in Historic Museum Management, Science Education, Business or related field with 5 years of relevant work experience with preference to Master’s degree in these areas preferred.

Essential skills and abilities:

· Strong computer skills in writing, communications, time management, administrative and financial management.

· Demonstrated background in strategic planning, fundraising, grant writing, personnel supervision and evaluation, budget preparation and management, marketing, and program implementation.

· Minimum of 5 years of experience working in a non-profit organization related to museums, archival, or historic sites.

· Ability to work equally well with Trustees and board members, staff, volunteers, and visitors in a mature and pleasant manner.

· Able to relocate to Blackhawk County, Iowa.

· Physical requirements include standard physical mobility, which includes daily office and outside activities (walking, sitting for extended periods, climbing stairs, stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, push/pulling, talking, hearing, etc.); occasional lifting up to 50 pounds.

Preferred experience

Background in using curator database software Microsoft programs and desktop computer. Knowledge of Iowa History.

Experience in working closely with local, regional, national, and international media, tourism officials, elected officials, museum associations and etc. to promote museum programming.

FTE: Full-time, benefits package available. Expected salary range: $80,000 - $90,000.

Travel: Occasional travel is expected.
