GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
General oversight of the veterinary health care technician team to ensure the best quality of care to the animals and excellent customer service to the community. This will include scheduling, technical training, medical record management, medical inventory management, assisting the Medical Director in the development of protocols, and general team support in addition to performing physical and behavioral examination and medical procedures of animals admitted to and adopted from the animal shelter.
 
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Employees in this class must have strong leadership skills in a fast paced environment. These individuals must also be able to perform in varying complexity medical procedures such as identifying and treating animal illness, pharmacology and drug dosing, administering anesthesia, surgical related procedures, euthanasia, performing and interpreting examinations and diagnostic testing, and the responsibility of drawing up controlled substances and maintaining controlled substance records, medical records, and procedures.  Reports to the Medical Director of Animal Services.
Essential Duties and Tasks
 
  • Monitor and maintain scheduling of team members
  • Manage controlled substance inventory including upkeep of logs and incidents
  • Monitor and maintain schedule of surgical procedures
  • Ensure animal medical records are completed and accurate
  • Training of technicians in technical skills
  • Facilitates staff training in and enforcement of medical protocols
  • Ensure continued animal flow by effective interdepartmental communication
  • Perform physical examination of animals; administers vaccinations; performs house diagnostic testing and interprets results; prepares and administers medications to animals in emergency and non-emergency situations and as part of an established treatment plan.
  • Monitor and evaluates overall health of the general animal population; identifies and addresses ill animals in accordance with established guidelines; coordinates with veterinarian as needed.
  • Perform euthanasia by injection, maintains all applicable records including DEA controlled substance records.
  • Assist veterinarian with sterilization surgeries, including calculating drug dosages, administering and monitoring anesthesia, responding to anesthetic emergencies, and performing pre and post-surgical procedures. Cleans and maintains surgical instruments, equipment and surgical suite.
 
RECRUITMENT STANDARDS
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of modern office practices and procedures, including modern office technology.
  • Knowledge of disease management/recognition and general animal care.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform specific diagnostic testing to assist with determining health of animal.
  • Knowledge of vaccinations required and proper techniques.
  • Knowledge of animal shelter policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of and ability to perform physical exams and identify and address medical problems/diseases.
  • Ability and knowledge to perform specific treatments/procedures (i.e. wound care, fluid replacement, etc.).
  • Ability to obtain certification as rabies vaccinator.
  • Ability to obtain certification and perform euthanasia by injection.
  • Ability to keep accurate and detailed records.
  • Ability to perform medical calculations, such as fluid maintenance rates, dilutions, drug calculations, etc.
  • Ability to perform procedures such as venipuncture, intubations, catheter placement, aseptic surgical patient preparation.
  • Ability to effectively operate and use a variety of medical and office equipment such as microscope, stethoscope, gas anesthesia machines, syringes, catheters, otoscope, ophthalmoscope, centrifuge, pulse oximeter, etc.

  • Ability to maintain high level of attention to detail
Associate's Degree in Veterinary Medical Technology and two years of experience in veterinary or related field, or High School diploma and four years of experience in veterinary or related field, plus at least two years of supervisory/managerial experience. Possession of, or the ability to obtain, certification to administer euthanasia by injection and as a rabies vaccinator.

The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.
 
Working conditions are in a kennel environment with frequent exposure to laboratory conditions including hazardous materials, unfavorable fumes and odors, and working with animal body fluids and infectious diseases, and loud noises.

May Require Driving 
This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions.   Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver's license and that the driving record is compatible with the county's driving criteria.
If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County's vehicle use policy.
