Hampton University Proton Cancer Institute (Hampton Proton) is seeking a highly skilled Executive Director that will provide overall leadership, day-to-day oversight of daily operations, executive direction for the strategic plan, compliance, and quality assurance. Create an organizational culture that promotes transparency, collaboration, communication, and cooperation while driving Hampton Proton’s mission, vision, and values.

Hampton Proton is the nation’s 8th proton therapy facility and one of the largest free-standing proton clinics in the world. The state-of-the-art treatment and research center has four gantry rooms and one fixed beam room. Hampton Proton has been treating a variety of cancers since August 2010.

Hampton Proton uses IBA’s Proteus 235 proton therapy delivery system, MOSAIQ Oncology Information System (Elektra), Eclipse Proton Treatment Planning system (Varian) and a Philips 4D-PET/CT for simulations, and a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MR Ingenia 3T) by Philips. Our Proteus 235 system is equipped with IBA’s universal nozzles. We are using Uniform Scanning, Double Scattering, and Pencil Beam Scanning treatment delivery techniques in our treatment rooms.

Reports to: The Hampton Proton Executive Director reports directly to the University Senior Vice President of Business Operations & Finance (SVP).

Direct reports: Director of Finance & Administration, Information Technology Administrator, Director of Clinical Operations, Chief Physicist, Chief Radiation Therapist, and Chief Nurse. The Executive Director works mutually with the contracted Physicians and are held accountable for clinical patient outcome and satisfaction.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Works with management to shape the vision and set the strategy for the organization to achieve goals and objectives of Hampton University and Hampton Proton.
  • Translates the vision and strategy into realistic, multi-year goals and annual objectives.
  • Works collaboratively with the University and Hampton Proton senior leadership teams to identify, create, and implement strategic plans to build the company’s growth and expansion in alignment with the organization’s business objectives.
  • Holds the leadership team accountable for their responsibilities and leadership.
  • Develops partnerships with company stakeholders, industry regulators and other relevant parties.
  • Ensures the mission, values, and vision of Hampton Proton are met through the achievement of long-term financial sustainability and operational stability.
  • Team with the Director of Finance to oversee financial accounts, prepare the annual operating and capital budgets, manage company assets, report expenditures, optimize revenue, maintain sound financial practices and operations. Determines the appropriate allocation of resources throughout the organization to optimize profitability and achieve strategic goals.
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Finance to develop insurance payor strategies to improve access to proton therapy, including coverage determinations, appeals and single case agreements.
  • Assist the Director of Finance to ensure billing is optimized and documentation is adequately maintained.
  • Work with the University to ensure that resources are available to provide efficient and effective quality care.
  • Work closely with the Director of Marketing to identify potential sources for fundraising initiatives, grant proposals, external communications, multimedia buys, as well as community outreach, public relations, branding initiatives, and patient advocacy.
  • Represent the company at social and corporate events in ways that strengthen the brand and communicate the company’s vision.
  • Lecturing, per approval, to build a community bond about the excellent care provided at Hampton Proton, about proton therapy in general.
  • Monitor company operations and ensure employees and business practices comply with regulatory and legal requirements.
  • Reinforce, uphold, maintain, and establish adequate protocols to ensure accurate patient treatment delivery standards.
  • Work closely with the Chief Medical Physicist to manage the relationship with the proton therapy vendor, review weekly, monthly and quarterly downtime reports and help resolve associated operational issues that arise.
  • Combine action plans with the Clinical Operations Director to set standard operating procedures, organize center-wide compliance programs, develop a solid relationship with CHKD for Diagnostic Pediatric Anesthesia program, and create Research Diagnostic program.
  • Assure the efficient operation of workflow within the Center by performing other duties as assigned by the Senior Vice President of Business Operations & Finance.
  • Ensures the highest levels of clinical quality and effectiveness throughout the organization by working with the Medical Director to build upon the existing culture of excellence in the delivery of clinical quality and patient safety and the use of best practices and transparency.
  • Assist the Chief Medical Physicist and Chief Radiation Therapist in assuring Radiation Safety programs meet state requirements, treatment equipment and devices are fully operational, standard maintenance schedule is performed, and quality assurance measures meet the deadlines.
  • Collaborates with the Medical Director to ensure medical services comply with quality improvement activities to provide patients with the finest care through communication between Physicians, patient care team, and patients to streamline processes
  • Develop and maintain an imaging program that can be accredited by the American College of Radiology (ACR). To increase internal patient throughput, while introducing a new internal revenue stream.
  • Collaborate with the Chief Nurse to achieve optimal patient care initiatives, develop expeditious patient throughput processes, delivery of high-quality nursing care to ensure Hampton Proton is safe and is consistent with the regulations governing practice in the State of Virginia.
  • Provide transparent insight to the SVP of Business Operations & Finance on all aspects of operations.
  • Ensure accurate analysis and documentation is reported to the University as requested.
  • Effectively and in a timely manner communicate productivity challenges to the University.
  • Support Information Technology with ongoing initiatives to provide advance technological network systems, hardware, and software associated with Storage Area Network (SAN), Domain Account Management, EMR database and accesses to ensure network security and risk mitigation.
  • Ensure Human Resources has access to sourcing platforms within proton networks for recruitment to implement a talented team of professionals who can excel in their career choice, deliver quality care, and help Hampton Proton reach its objectives/goals.
  • Build out organizational design, workforce planning, change management, and communication processes through HR data related to staffing, performance management, compensation, compliance, employee engagement, training, and development.
  • Assist the University to develop research at the center and grant opportunities to help offset the costs of such research.
  • Assure the efficient operation of workflow within the Center by performing other duties as assigned by the University Senior Vice President of Business Operations & Finance.

  • Successfully handles challenges through conflict resolution, project management, and delegation.

Requirements:

· Bachelor’s degree in Healthcare Administration, Business Administration, or a related field of study.

· Master’s degree (MBA) is highly preferred.

· Proton therapy operations experience is preferred.

· At least 5 years of proven executive leadership in healthcare administration; preferably radiation oncology.

· Intermediate to expert computer skills including the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
