The Position:
Small law firm servicing corporate, insurance, and individual clients, primarily in the petroleum industry, in connection with commercial litigation and transactional matters looking to immediately hire an associate with a minimum of 4 years of litigation and/or transactional experience. The position will be primarily remote with the occasional need for local travel (mostly Connecticut and New York) to accomplish various tasks, such as in-person court appearances, client meetings, depositions, closings, hearing, and trials. Admission to Connecticut and New York bars required. Admission to other state bars a plus. Salary commensurate with experience. Paid time off and benefits offered. Harriton & Furrer, LLP is a boutique law firm that focuses on representing corporate, insurance, and individual clients in environmental and commercial litigation and transactional matters. Many of the firm’s clients are in the petroleum industry and focus on wholesale and retail marketing and sales. For certain clients that do not have internal legal departments, Harriton & Furrer, LLP fulfills that role by performing day-to-day operational tasks such as preparing and reviewing contracts, helping clients to understand their contractual and statutory rights and obligations, assisting with regulatory and environmental compliance, and handling mergers and acquisitions. When disputes arise, Harriton & Furrer, LLP can manage all phases of that process including litigation, if necessary. Even with clients that have an in-house legal team, Harriton & Furrer, LLP is often brought in when disputes arise to attempt early resolution and, if that is not possible, litigate the matter as outside counsel.
Associate Responsibilities:
- Assisting with the preparation, filing, and service of pleadings and discovery requests/responses.
- Managing small to large-scale document reviews/productions.
- Summarizing deposition and trial transcripts, exhibits, document productions, and medical records.
- Researching case-related factual issues using in-house files and outside reference sources.
- Proofreading and cite-checking legal briefs.
- Assisting with trial preparation including the assembly of exhibits, witness binders, and appendices for depositions and court filings.
- Assisting with the preparation and filing of appellate records.
- Organizing and managing documents, including the creation of spreadsheets and retrieval systems.
- Acting as a liaison among all parties including court personnel and opposing counsel.
Education & Experience:
- Juris doctor.
- Minimum 4 years of experience with significant commercial litigation and/or transactional matters.
- Proficiency with Word and Excel required.
- Proficiency in Spanish preferred.
- Notary Public preferred.
- Legal research experience required.
