Job Summary and Qualifications
As a Unit Secretary, you will be responsible for secretarial functions in the appropriate department. You will interact with patients, visitors, physicians, office staff, and hospital personnel in a professional manner. You will communicate patient information, enter patient orders, prioritize the flow of patient information, and act as a centralized communication facilitator for patient care areas.
- You will answer phones, route calls, and take messages
- You will maintain unit-based logs on patients for admissions, transfers, and discharges
- You will be responsible for ordering and maintaining unit supplies, forms, and handouts
- You will keep health information management files and forms organized and orderly
- You will obtain equipment needed by nurses
- You will input patient charges into the computer for all designated chargeable services provided on the unit
- You will be responsible for printing patient discharge instructions, relaying discharge and transfer information to the appropriate personnel, discharging patients from the system upon their exit from the unit, and notifying housekeeping of rooms to be cleaned after patient discharge
- You will enter all physician orders, notify nurses of new electronic patient orders, and identify and report order policy violations
- You will prepare new patient charts, maintain chart organization with required forms, and organize charts for transfer and discharged patients
- You will assist, guide, and direct patients, visitors, nurses, and physicians
- You will answer call lights, instruct transporters regarding the patient transportation log, and assist with sending specimens to the lab as needed
- You will act as a resource for office equipment including computers, printers, fax machines, telephones, and paging systems
What qualifications you will need:
- High School Graduate / GED
