Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in microbiology, biology, molecular biology or a related field and two years of research experience, or a Master's in a related field and one year of research experience.

 

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting may not be available. If telecommuting is available, the incumbent will be required to have a telephone/mobile device, and internet access.

Preferred Qualifications

At least one year of experience with molecular methods, including the development and validation of PCR and sequencing assays for the detection and/or characterization of viral pathogens or other infectious agents. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software, including database management.  Experience with molecular software including genomic sequence analysis packages.

Responsibilities

The Research Scientist I (RSI) will work closely and collaborate with Virology team members to perform and contribute with all aspects of viral laboratory response efforts. The Virology team has been involved with COVID testing since 2020 and is currently providing laboratory support for this response as well as other viral agents including poliovirus. This position will include assisting with receipt and accessioning of clinical and wastewater samples, sample testing with real-time PCR, conventional PCR and sequencing, sample archiving, packaging, and shipping samples to CDC, preparation of sample containment data sheets for PI review and signature, maintenance of databases, and the preparation of data updates and reports for meetings. The incumbent will also play a key role in the development, validation, and implementation of testing methods. Other related duties as assigned.

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
