Executive Director Overview
HCM is seeking a dynamic executive leader who will have overall strategic and operational responsibility for HCM’s programs, staff, partnerships and execution of its mission. The ED will work to develop and execute a robust fundraising plan and grow our individual, foundation and corporate donor base.
The ED must be a strong relationship builder and communicator who is able to find and act on opportunities within the community in addition to maintaining and cultivating our existing partnerships. About Heartland Chamber Music (HCM)
What began in 2001 as a summer camp to offer local students the opportunity to study and perform chamber music, Heartland Chamber Music has grown into an organization that has inspired students as diverse as physicians, professional symphony musicians and groups of ethnically and racially diverse preschoolers in low socioeconomic neighborhoods throughout our community. The organization has served more than 7000 students and presented more than 350 concerts throughout the past 23 years in addition to established partnerships with the KC Symphony, Friends of Chamber Music, UMKC Conservatory of Music, Midwest Trust Center JCCC, Kansas Public Radio, KC Public Schools, Guadalupe Center, Rolling Hills Presbyterian Church and Asbury United Methodist Church.
Responsibilities
Financial management and Fund Development
- Implement a comprehensive development strategy to include individual gifts, corporate, foundation and government grants.
- Prepare the annual budget and oversee finances and cash flow to ensure compliance with the approved budget.
- Develop and implement effective strategic business, financial and operational plans that will maintain a financially stable and sustainable organization.
Program management
- Provide supervision and leadership to staff which enables effective and efficient operations of programs.
- Oversee HCM’s staffing decisions including hiring, promotions, annual performance reviews, and terminations.
- Maintain positive relationships with artists and faculty and empower artistic staff to act as ambassadors to HCM’s programming.
- Work directly with the Artistic Director to ensure artistic integrity with all programming.
- Maintain and cultivate relationships with current and potential partners.
- Coordinate and oversee the development of marketing materials including website updates for all programs, in addition to creating and executing HCM’s communication strategy.
- Advise social media staff on communication content and social media strategy.
Board Relations
- Jointly with the Board, evaluate, modify and update HCM’s Strategic Plan.
- Provide administrative support to the Board and assist in meeting, recruitment, orientation and development.
- Cultivate a strong working relationship with timely and regular communication.

Education and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree required.
- Five or more years of nonprofit management experience in an operational environment preferred.
- The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience and success in nonprofit leadership or arts management in addition to managing professionals in the areas of accounting/ finances, grant administration, marketing and fundraising.
Work Culture
This is a full-time position with flexible hours and schedule. Working from home is optional, and being in the office located at the Livestock Exchange Building will be on an “as needed basis”. HCM is an exciting environment; working with artists, community leaders and partners, and student musicians from KC and beyond.
Salary range based on experience: $60,000 - $75,000
