POSITION TITLE: Assistant Cook

OUTCOMES
Assist the Cook in preparing meals in a manner that reflects the spirit and mission of The Salvation Army.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Under the direction of the cook ensures that meals are planned, prepared and provided for our community worship center
- Plans and publishes monthly menus.
- Ensure that delicious meals conform with the dietary requirements as listed in the AgeOptions dietary guidelines; for those prone to diabetes, high blood pressure, liver and kidney deficiencies and cardiac problems. A low sodium and sugar diet is expected.
- Plans and publishes monthly menus.
- Order and receive supplies for meals.
- Stays within budget constraints.
- Determine appropriate quantity of food for preparation, heating and serving.
- Food preparation
- In conjunction and coordination with the officers and or management staff, develop and review proposed menus and accompanying prices for food service, special events and rentals. Be responsible for development, preparation and distribution of all food and beverage distribution for special events and rentals.
- All related documentation is properly maintained.
- Maintain the work area in a manner that enables effective planning, preparation and delivery of meals.
- The receipt of deliveries and maintenance of food service areas are organized and supervised.
- The kitchen area is cleaned and maintained on a daily basis at standards which insure full compliance with all health and sanitation requirements.
- Food and equipment are maintained and secured.
- Proper sanitation is maintained, including frequent washing of hands, especially after breaks or restroom use.
- Be available to work weeknights, weekends, and holidays, as may be required.
- Participate in site inventories.
- Team relationships are developed and maintained in order to effectively achieve objectives.
- Orient kitchen workers and volunteers on proper sanitation procedures, food handling, preparation and service.
- Works as a team with and takes direction from Corps Officer.
- Receive constructive criticism from clients as well as suggestions from a volunteer board in order to more effectively provide meals.
- Ensures a professional area where personal appearance, grooming and presentation reflect the professional standards of excellence of The Salvation Army.
- All other duties as assigned.
REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS
This position reports to the Cook and Corps Administrator.
In contacts related to this position’s duties, this individual acts as a representative of Th Salvation Army and its mission.
PERFORMANCE MEASURES
This individual will be evaluated on how effectively the outcomes of this position are achieved, as well as the timeliness, accuracy and completeness of accomplishing assigned goals.
A 30, 60, and 90-day performance review will be conducted.
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2 years college in culinary arts, or vocational certification in food preparation.
- Must have successfully completed the Illinois Department of Public Health food service sanitation certification training and have a current certificate.
- One year food service experience.

POSITION LIMITATIONS
- This individual will only commit Army resources that have been allocated or approved.
- This individual will keep the Cook and Corps Administrator informed on all critical issues relating to their area of responsibility.
- This individual will adhere to all policies and procedures in carrying out the responsibilities of this position.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORK ENVIRONMENT
- This position requires light to moderate physical work.
- In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to use of standard kitchen equipment.
- Must be able to lift or move up to 50 lbs.
- The work environment for this position includes an office and kitchen environment with a low to high noise level.
- Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors.
