POSITION SUMMARY:

Philosophy of the Nursing Department
Physical and Supportive Care
- Demonstrates support for the Philosophy of the Nursing Department by adhering to policies, procedures and established
standards of nursing practice.
- Health teaching to residents and their families.
- Executes procedures consistent with resident care and with the facilities Nursing Department Standard, Policy and Procedure
Manual.
- Utilizes the nursing process to plan and provide resident care
and to evaluate results of these interventions.
Communication:
- Communicates pertinent information regarding resident / patient care through out the tour of duty and at change of shift
- Interacts appropriately with staff, physicians and other departments in a collegial relationship in order that resident and
family needs are met.
- Utilizes effective communication skills in interpersonal relationships with resident, families and other members of the

Responsibilities

- Makes appropriate decisions with information received from assessments
- Identifies and defines nursing diagnosis/nursing problems from
assessment data.
- Demonstrates knowledge and applications of professional
standards of care and nursing process in daily practice.
- Demonstrates accountability for personal and professional,
ethical and legal standards.
- Reviews physician orders on assigned residents prior to care and requests physician's orders when appropriate to plan of
resident care.
- Administers PO,IM,PR, topical and IV intravenous medications
within required timeframes
- Is responsible for the maintenance of all IV sites
- Manages charge responsibilities of nursing unit, supervises resident care delivered by the Certified Nursing Assistants and
assumes responsibility for the delivery of care to all residents on the unit.
- Validates information gathered by LPN's
- Initiates a resident/patient care plan (interim admission) Treatment plan (MTP) and full care plan on each assigned
admission based on nursing assessment and identification of nursing problems within unit specific guidelines.
Meetings and Conferences
- Contributes in a constructive manner in staff meetings and
resident care conferences.
- Completion of all mandatory in-services provided by the facility.
Infection Control
- Utilizes accepted techniques of infection control.
Safety
- Uses proper safety techniques and complies with all facility
safety procedures.
- Provides for the safety and security needs of the residents

- Supports the change process in concert with institutional goals
and objectives.

Demonstrates Competency in the following areas as related to the Behavioral Health Hospital Unit
- Provides care appropriate to condition and age of patient including, adult and the geriatric population.
- Ability to perform nursing assessments on all patients and reassessments as per policy. This includes geriatric and the
general patient population.
- Ability to adequately assess and reassess pain. Utilizes appropriate pain management techniques. Educates the patient
and family regarding pain management.
- Performs thorough patient psychiatric interviews, obtains
psychiatric history.
- Continuously observes patient's behavior, mental status and
activities.
- Formulates and implements patient treatment plans; family is
included when aooropriate.
- Ability to revise treatment plans as indicated by the patient's response to treatment and evaluates overall plan daily for
effectiveness.
- Demonstrates ability to perform treatments and provide services
to level of licensure.
- Knowledgeable of medications including psychotropic drugs and their correct administration based on the age of the patient
and their clinical condition.
- Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for
medication errors.
- Performs patient care responsibilities considering needs specific
to the standard of care for patient's age.
- Demonstrates the ability to perform crisis intervention and
triage.
- Provides psychotherapeutic treatments to patients and families; participates in treatment plan for individual psychotherapy,
group therapy, family therapy and educational classes.
- Communicates appropriately and clearly to the Program
Manager, Supervisor, coworkers and physicians.
- Concurs with members of the treatment team for the benefit of
the patient.
- Consults other departments as appropriate to provide for an
interdisciplinary approach to the patient's needs.
- Treats patients and families with respect and dignity; provides emotional support.

- Graduate of approved School of Nursing
- Current license to practice nursing in the State of Connecticut, Current state Registered Nurse Licensure
- A minimum of (1) year experience in a behavioral health care setting.
- Completion of mandatory in-service provided by the facility.
- Current BCLS certification, ACLS preferred
- Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
- Additional languages preferred.
- Basic computer knowledge.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of a wide range of psychosocial, cognitive and/or developmental disorders.
- Experience in gerontological nursing preferred.
- BS in nursing or health-related field preferred or actively pursuing
