What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Payroll Accountant position at Hennepin County?
The Office of Budget & Finance is hiring a Senior Payroll Accountant who will perform assignments of a more complex nature and require greater independent judgement and creativity for payroll and accounting duties using PeopleSoft HCM system. This position will focus on a specific group of employees, processing their payroll and assisting with their needs and requests. This includes processing payroll taxes and using general accounting principles around processing payroll.

Location and hours:
This position is hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th Street, Minneapolis, MN 55487, and remote as job duties require. Work hours will be flexible within core business hours, typically Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022, to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In this position, you will:
- Work with employees on their payroll set-ups. Including timesheet entries, deductions, benefits and taxes.
- Manage the bank accounts with another accountant balancing the accounts between two companies.
- Prepare and submit payments on a strict deadline for benefit deductions to various vendors.
- Reconcile high-profile accounts both internally and externally; prepare routine and complex journal entries, transactions and reconciliations.
- Prepare and submit quarterly and annual tax filings.
- Assist internal and external auditors with their review of tax filings and financial information.
Need to have:
- One of the following:
- Six years or more of professional experience in a specific functional area of accounting, auditing or financial management.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in accounting, business administration with an emphasis in accounting, or other specialty area related to the position and two years or more of professional experience in a specific functional area of accounting, auditing or financial management.
- Payroll accounting and payroll processing experience.
- Experience with Microsoft Office applications and PeopleSoft HCM or a similar ERP (enterprise resource planning software).
- Professional experience in tax reporting, payroll tax regulations and working with taxing agencies.
- Knowledge of generally accepted payroll accounting principles.
- Ability to:
- Handle multiple priorities with minimal direction.
- Communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Meet deadlines and produce accurate work in a fast-paced office environment.
