What are the responsibilities and job description for the HR Generalist position at Herrero Builders?

We are looking for an enthusiastic HR Generalist with broad experience in key areas of HR management – HR Compliance, Recruitment, Performance Management, Employee Benefits, Employee Relations, and Policy Development. The successful candidate will work with all levels of the Company and must demonstrate professional discretion, independent judgment, strong initiative and follow through, and a customer service orientation with a focus on developing and modeling the Herrero Builders Core values. This position will report to the Knowledge Area Leader, People. This position can be based in either our San Francisco or Walnut Creek location. While much of the role can be performed from home, there is an expectation to spend time in the offices and/or at project sites when valuable or necessary to meet business needs.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The HR Generalist will support the business by contributing to all aspects of the Human Resources function. Specifically, the individual will be responsible for:

  • Responding to employee inquiries regarding HR policies and practices referring complex and/or sensitive matters as appropriate.
  • Identifying and recommending policy and/or procedure changes to improve employee experience and alignment with business needs/goals.
  • Anticipating and addressing talent and staffing needs for each area of the business.
  • Leading recruitment activity across the candidate lifecycle including: preparing job descriptions, posting open positions, conducting interviews, candidate tracking, reference checks and presenting offers.
  • Handling employment related inquiries from applicants and recruiters.
  • Coordinating college recruitment activities including representing HBI on campus.
  • Ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations, and recommending best practices; reviewing policies and practices to maintain compliance. This includes all employee record keeping, and reporting (EEOC).
  • Leading the benefits enrollment process and playing a key role in renewal and review decisions.
  • Managing all aspects of Leaves of Absence.
  • Leading/Coordinating immigration activities, working closely with immigration attorney and HR team members to ensure applications are executed in an accurate, timely, and ethical manner.
  • Contributing to all Human Resources operational and cyclical programs (performance assessment, salary review, bonus program).
  • Administering HR related training programs and evaluating their effectiveness.
  • In collaboration with HR team, implement health and well-being initiatives.

REQUIREMENTS

Education and Experience:


  • Minimum 5 years of Human Resources experience with depth in recruitment, benefits and compliance.
  • PHR or four-year degree in Human Resources or similar major are a plus.
  • Experience in the AEC industry is strongly preferred.
  • Experience working with all levels of employees, including upper management.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities


  • Confidence in providing solid, best practice guidance and recommendation to managers when dealing with performance and/or employee relations matters.
  • Drive to continuously educate self of best practices related to HR management, employment law, and technology to improve department’s offering.
  • Deep Experience with benefits administration.
  • Knowledge of CA and Federal labor laws and compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of CA and Federal Leave of Absence requirements and processes and experience with implementation.
  • Proven ability to prioritize and manage tasks and requests from multiple sources.
  • Strong writing, analytical and problem ‐ solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with an excellent customer service focus.
  • Evidence of building and maintaining strong relationships with managers and employees alike.
  • Commitment to high quality workmanship and team spirit.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently, as well as part of a team.
  • Ability to analyze and validate data in a detailed method.
  • Strong English communication skills both written and verbal, bilingual in Spanish is a plus.
  • Able to conduct job site and offices visits, as needed.
  • Ability to work in front of a computer for long periods of time.
  • Comfortable working remotely on virtual platforms.
  • PC proficiency in Microsoft office software is required. Prior experience with Kronos Workforce Ready is a plus.
