Position: Nurse
Reports to: Direct Superivsor/ Building Principal / Superintendent
Summary: To provide needed services for optimum fulfullment of the health needs of the school program for students and staff. To work collaboratively with school administrators/staff, medical advisors, local EMS agencies, local health care practitioners, and parents/guardians, the school nurse can be instrumental in establishing a comprehensive program of emergency care aimed at reducing student morbidity and mortality.
Duties:
1. Maintain cumulative health file on each student.
2. Assure district regulations are met regarding dental examinations, physical examinations and immunizations – follow state policy for exclusion and eye exam. Review and interpret medical and dental reports. Send letters to all students in need of additions/corrections.
3. Carry out vision and hearing screening programs and follow-up on deviations.
4. Conduct school programs of immunizations when needed.
5. Participate in the planning and follow-up of screening programs by agencies outside the school.
6. Interpret the health and developmental status of the pupil to him/herself, his/her parents/guardians and school personnel.
7. Counsel with pupils and staff in dealing with their health problems.
8. Compile and maintain a file of current health education materials for students and faculty.
9. Act as consultant and resource person to staff in their health teaching.
10. Encourage and assist with in-service health education programs.
11. Establish policies and procedures for providing emergency care for illness and/or injury occurring while the student in under the jurisdiction of the school.
12. Work with community agencies for effective use of their resources and facilities.
13. Appraise student health problems and inform teachers. Develop confidential health report for all necessary staff members and update as needed.
14. Conduct home visits and health histories, as required, for special education purposes in a timely manner.
15. Serve on IEP committee for students with medical needs.
16. Other reasonable tasks as assigned by the school administration within the scope of what is required of other non-certified staff members.
17. Dispense medicine to students. Get medicine ready for all field trips.
18. Maintain medicine in locked cabinet and maintain medication and records/first aid supplies.
19. Check absences daily to better help social worker monitor any potential truancy issues.
20. State reporting of: vision/hearing Screenings, immunizations, and dental/eye examinations.
21. Assist with district head-lice checks.
22. Respond to emergencies as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
- RN, LPN or CSN (Certified School Nurse) Certification Preferred.
- Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Must be detailed oriented.
- Ability to maintain good working relationship with fellow employees, pupils and parents/guardians.
