Job Description
JOB SUMMARY: Performs a variety of routine tasks in the laboratory including blood collection by venipuncture and capillary puncture; facilitates and documents the flow of patient specimens in and out of the laboratory; completes patient clerical information. Performs a variety of clerical duties and other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
Licensing Requirements:
Current and Active California Certified Phlebotomy Technician 1 - required
Skill Requirements
Must meet the venipuncture requirements of the California Business and Professions Code and the California Administrative Code.
Language Requirements
Ability to understand English.
Spanish language skills are helpful.
Physical Demands
Stands, walks, sits, bends, reaches overhead, crouches, kneels, pushes, pulls, and uses both hands when performing assigned duties.
Must be able to sit and stand for 6 hours or more per day.
Must be able to use hands repetitively for 4 hours or more.
Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
Special Demands
Willing to perform repetitive tasks.
Ability to work with others and to perform a variety of assigned duties.
Must be able to tolerate blood, tissues and any specimen generated by a hospital.

PERFORMANCE DIMENSIONS AND TASKS

Essential Function
- Obtains venous blood samples as required.
- Checks patient identification before drawing sample and compares with laboratory slip to ensure accuracy
- Follows established policy when drawing blood and labeling specimens.
- Prepares blood samples for analysis in the laboratory and send outs to reference lab.
- Alerts technologist when test abnormalities or irregularities are encountered in test orders.
- Verifies that sample is labeled properly per Lab policy manual.
- Accommodates STAT orders and other orders as requested.
- Responds promptly to orders as they are requested.
- Logs specimens into the Laboratory information System and prepares report forms and processes charges.
- Charge slips are legible, completed on time and are accurate
- Gives accurate attention to required data and reports
- Bookkeeping is kept current and submitted on time.
- Maintains venipuncture supplies requisitions replacements; performs inventory and supply stocking.
- Maintains adequate supply and levels without hoarding.
- Inventories are accurate; orders supply levels on time and stocks accurately.
- Notifies supervisor when unusual increases in stock demands occur, or supplies are back ordered.
- Charts reports on inpatients and delivers or mails outpatient reports to referring physicians.
- Ensures accuracy and completeness of patient information.
- Prepares reports in accurate manner and in accordance with established procedures.
- Assists others in the completion of work assignments.
- Willingly helps others in laboratory in completing laboratory assignments or performs other tasks as assigned.
- Responds positively to changes in the work schedule; continually uses time to department advantage.
- Follows designated infection control procedures.
- Washes hands before and after each patient contact and between tests.
- Performs miscellaneous clerical duties.
- Consistently and accurately logs information, filing it accurately reports are rarely misfiled.
