Overview
The executive director of digital content works to promote and defend the mission of Hillsdale College online. Primary duties include overseeing the College’s main social media accounts and other important online publications; writing, editing, and publishing online content; and promoting the programs and teaching of the College to a wide audience.
Responsibilities
Produce daily content to be distributed on social media channels and other websites.
Ensure that all content is consistent with the mission of the College and is well-written (i.e., proper spelling and grammar, logical, etc.)
Maintain an understanding of the College’s existing content and upcoming programs.
Use program content effectively to address pressing issues related to the College’s work and public teaching.
Generate ideas for future content and review regularly with colleagues.
Write emails to be sent to the College audience.
Publish content, including text, images, video, and other media to social media channels and College websites.
Maintain knowledge of and report regularly on the number of social media subscribers, engagement metrics, and general traffic visiting College accounts.
Manage effective responses to posts or replies related to the mission of the College.
Work to respond to current controversies, as appropriate, with College content.
Oversee the written content on assigned College properties including the blog, Freedom Library, and other sites.
Maintain knowledge of timely and relevant issues related to the teaching mission of the College.
Work with colleagues in the department to learn the College’s style and voice; apply them to online content.
As assigned, edit text produced by other departments and outside vendors to ensure it meets department standards and is consistent with the mission of the College.
Work with other departments in a collegial fashion to oversee and improve online content.
Be willing to work on other assigned projects and tasks as needed with good cheer.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
An M.A. degree or higher is required for this position. Experience sufficient to perform the job is desirable.
Other Skills
Knowledge of general editing standards (Chicago is preferred).
Possess good grammar skills.
Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to express ideas effectively.
Accuracy and thoroughness.
Possess sound judgment and maturity.
Knowledge of social media functions and features, including software related to posting and maintaining digital content.
Possess good organizational skills.
Ability to be a self-starter, work with limited supervision, and make independent decisions.
Possess good interpersonal skills.
Maintain a calm and cheerful demeanor while handling multiple tasks on deadline.
Personal Characteristics
The Department of External Affairs interacts with College faculty, staff, students, parents, subscribers, donors, and speakers. A clean and neat appearance and a pleasant relationship that is supportive of the College mission is essential. This relationship needs to be supportive and professional, while maintaining confidentiality as needed.
Physical Requirements
Ability to read, write, hear, speak, see, and communicate effectively. Ability to operate basic office equipment. Occasional lifting of office supplies, booklets, files, and heavy packages, as necessary.
