Description

This is a supervisory position for sworn law enforcement officers. The incumbent is expected to supervise police officers and security personnel as well as oversee the daily operations of their assigned shift or assignment.

They are also expected to provide basic law enforcement services to the college-wide community within the mission, goals, and objectives of the agency in compliance with all local, state, and federal laws.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF THE FUNCTION : All Hinds Community College employees must commit to the Caring Campus approach to student engagement and daily apply these general behavioral objectives : listen to student questions and concerns with a positive attitude and make meaningful connections with students.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIREMENTS : To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

  • Must possess a current police officer certification through the MS Board of Law Enforcement Standards and Training (BLEOST) or other equivalent.
  • Minimum of five (5) years of experience in law enforcement; two (2) years of supervisory experience.
  • Must not have a criminal historyIf prior military must have an honorable dischargeIf prior law enforcement, must not have been terminated for reasons of criminal activity, moral turpitude or other disciplinary grounds.

Must not be legally prohibited from possessing firearms.

  • Possess a good work history
  • Free from addictive or excessive use of either alcohol or drugs or use of any illegal substances
  • Free from any debilitating conditions or any other significant physical limitations or disabilities which would, in a physician's opinion, impair the applicant's ability to perform the essential duties and responsibilities of a police officer or complete the required minimum training requirements.

EDUCATION AND / OR EXPERIENCE :

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Law Enforcement Academy training (Certified by MS BLEOST)

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES : The essential functions include, but are not limited to, the following :

Act as a member of the department supervisory staff.Supervise, direct, and oversee shift operations.Ensure subordinates are fulfilling the college's mission by adhering to all orders and directives, while also making certain that the policies and philosophy of the Chief of Police are clearly understood and followed.

Depending on the assignment, allocate and review the work of department staff.Manage team performance and time / leave records.

  • Respond to major incidents and emergencies while on shift and assume incident command.
  • Interpret regulations, ordinances, laws, and codes for staff.
  • Evaluate and develop strategies to maintain order and provide an overall sense of security to students, visitors, and employees.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to the policies and procedures of the Hinds CC Campus Police Department and Hinds CC.
  • Gather, prepare, and report statistical data to ensure compliance with state and federal crime reporting requirements, and the Clery Act.
  • Ensure immediate supervisors are fully informed of any issues that may affect the Department's operations.
  • Perform police duties in a manner that supports the Police Department's vision, mission, and core values.
  • Execute special assignments as directed by senior leadership as needed.
  • Continuously study and make appropriate recommendations concerning the security and safety of the College community, buildings, and grounds.
  • Perform other duties as may be assigned by the appropriate authority.
  • Maintain knowledge of diversity-related issues, legislation, and best practices.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES : Sergeants are crucial members of the agency’s daily operations and as first-line supervisors are responsible for the daily operations of their assigned shift / unit, including personnel and resource management and allocation.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS : The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of a sworn police officer.

  • Primary functions require sufficient physical ability to work in a law enforcement setting; an office setting; restrain or subdue individuals;

  • regularly push, pull, lift, and / or carry light to moderate weights; frequently lift and / or move moderate to heavy weights;

occasionally lift and / or move heavy weights.

Operate office equipment including use of computer; requires a sense of touch, finger dexterity, and gripping with hands and fingers;

ability to speak and hear to exchange information.

Ability to operate multiple types of motor vehicles, and operate and use specialized law enforcement tools and equipment, including guns and handcuffs, and verbally communicate to exchange information.

Vision :

See in the normal visual range with or without correction.

Hearing :

Hear in the normal audio range with or without correction.

WORK ENVIRONMENT : The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, employee occasionally works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, in high / precarious places, with firearms and explosives, and is occasionally exposed to wet and / or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, and vibrations.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
