SUMMARY
Under the supervision of the Executive Director of Development, plans, organizes, directs, and coordinates ongoing fundraising programs, including annual fund, major gifts program, special events, and provides support to the capital campaign. Carries out the day-to-day activities of the Development Department consistent with established goals, objectives, scope, budget and policies. Primarily responsible for planning and executing individual donor prospecting, soliciting, and giving. Also, responsible for creating and maintaining the alumni database. As Development Manager, they will work with the Executive Director of Development to ensure that the financial and activity goals and objectives of the department are accomplished within the prescribed time frame and funding parameters.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

- Develops, expands, implements and maintains annual donor giving campaign and other major giving strategies.
- Analyzes, assesses and reports on fundraising goals and activities, and identifies potential individual donors, alumni, and corporate, foundation and federal partners.
- In collaboration with the Executive Director, conducts prospect research with local community, national, international and foundation entities to identify mutually beneficial partnerships in support of events, scholarships, student programs, special projects, and general ongoing operations. Writes, telephones or emails prospective contributors and persuades them to contribute funds or in-kind gifts by explaining mission, purpose, and benefits of partnering with HACU.
- Conducts all donor prospect research and analyzes their giving potential. In coordination with the Executive Director devises an approach strategy for each donor prospect.
- Works with Development Department staff to provides strategic and administrative support to HACU’s Capital Campaign fundraising activities.
- Plans, coordinates, and implements fund drives for special projects and events, including annual giving and micro-campaigns to reach current and potential contributors for pledges of ongoing support and contributions from individuals, alumni, corporations, federal agencies and foundations.
- Coordinates support for personal solicitations from members of staff, volunteer organizations, committees, alumni, governing board, and corporate & philanthropic council members according to special interests and capabilities.
- Develops and maintains the department’s donor databases. Provides data management support for the Development and Capital Campaign Departments by compiling, mining, warehousing data and updating data sources as needed or requested.
- Works with Development Coordinator to maintain Raiser’s Edge database with existing and prospective donors and their contributions to ensure internal and external financial reports are accurately prepared.
- Responsible for acknowledging all contributions made to HACU with letters of appreciation. Composes all letters and coordinates the mailings with the Development Coordinator. Ensures all letters are uploaded to corresponding records in Raiser’s Edge.
- Works with other Department staff to manage the sale of conference program advertising and sponsorship solicitations for annual, capitol forum and international conferences. Ensures all aspects of advertising and sponsor relations are addressed pre-event, on-site and post-event. Provides event analysis and statistical reports (pre- and post-) of sales efforts and results; new sales challenges and trends. Coordinates with Development and Finance staff on invoicing of conference advertisers and sponsors and keeps track of conference support.
- Collaborates with Conference & Events staff to help secure priority placement exhibit spaces as part of sponsorships and assures that sponsors and other exhibitors are properly accommodated in the exhibit area during conferences.
- Will explore and implement new fundraising activities such as foundation and corporate grants, legacy gifts, and donor recognition programs, among others.
- Will work on writing grant proposals to foundations, corporations or other potential funding partners.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Executive Director of Development and/or other senior HACU Staff.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Indirectly supervises available administrative support staff permanently or temporarily assisting the Executive Director. May occasionally supervise support staff in Executive Director’s absence as assigned.
Requirements
QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- A minimum of 2 years related experience in fundraising in a higher education and/or nonprofit setting with experience and background in donor prospecting, individual annual giving and general development activities.
- High level of proficiency with word processing and databases required, i.e., document merges, databases, creation, data entry, maintenance, report generation.
- Strong organizational, administrative, and communication skills (including oral presentation and written skills).
- Effective time management.
- Must be able to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment handling multiple projects with competing deadlines.
- Candidate must be results oriented, able to travel periodically and proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other PC-based software.
- Experience with Raiser’s Edge strongly preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Strong communication skills in written and oral English required. Must be able to interact effectively with staff at all levels. Ability to interact with individual, corporate and foundation donors, faculty & staff at institutions of higher education, students and other constituents of the association. Ability to write correspondence i.e., memos, letters, reports, etc. Grant writing experience is preferred. Ability to effectively present information in a professional manner and respond to questions about donating, membership, student services and other HACU programs to the general public in an informative fashion. Ability to speak and write in Spanish preferred but not required.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Good analytical and basic math skills. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers. Ability to calculate percent increase, percent decrease, and other calculations. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to solve practical problems. Ability to interpret variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or presentation form. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to deal with and solve problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical, intellectual and other demands described herein are representative (and not all inclusive) of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Office setting with sitting or standing, computer data entry, answering phones. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Work usually takes place in clean, pleasant, and comfortable office settings. Employees will work a standard of 40 hours a week; however, longer hours may be necessary at times. Conferences and events may take place in hotel and/or convention center settings and require longer hours of work on a constantly changing schedule, including work on weekends and evenings. The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job.
