What We Need:

We are looking for a Product Development Engineer Manager – Design Build Team (DBT) to join our HNI Workplace Furnishings team in Muscatine, Iowa!

The Product Development Engineering Manager strategically drives the technical direction for the Product Data Systems team. This role is responsible for collaboration with business and IT resources to define and implement solutions aimed at advancing the way our engineering teams work and collaborate, driving increased productivity and profitability. The role also mentors and supervises engineers on fundamentals of product engineering and provides broad technical leadership to the organization.

What You Will Do:

  • Develop and maintain standard work policies for product development software applications.
  • Conduct research on emerging application development software products, and standards in support of procurement and development efforts.
  • Assist in the design, creation and release software improvements and upgrades.
  • Train support team on software improvements and upgrades.
  • Continuously challenge past practices by actively exploring and implementing new solutions and methodologies to improve the quality and time to market of our product and services to the company.
  • Coordinate feasibility studies for software products and services under consideration for purchase, and give advice based on findings.
  • Collaborate with business analysts, solutions designers, and system owners in the testing of new software programs and applications
  • Oversee internal and external engineering resources to hit targeted launch dates, and other major milestones.
  • Develop and manage the department budgeting, resource planning, and project level capital and expense budgets.
  • Provide leadership with technical updates and acts as the subject matter expert.
  • Supervise, coordinate, provide leadership, and review work of assigned members. Conduct performance evaluations and recommend merit increases, promotions, transfers, corrective actions, and other personnel actions. Interview and recommend candidates for employment.

What You Have:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or related field required.
  • At least 6 years of relevant experience, 8 preferred.
  • Prior management/supervisory experience.
  • Experience successfully managing projects.
  • Operations and continuous improvement experience preferred.
  • At least 2 years furniture industry experience preferred.
  • Good analytical skills and ability to work oriented teams in a global environment
  • Experience with PLM software like Windchill and Oracle Cloud PLM
  • Experience with 3D modeling software (CREO or similar)
  • Familiar with basic concepts of product design, definition tools (CAD, Change Management, Parts, BOMs), and product development process.


What You’re Good At:

  • Oversite of agile development processes related to engineering tools and software, including the development of CAD automation development
  • Developing and communication strategic plans and future state roadmaps.
  • Oversight and demonstrated financial analysis including understanding of product level financial metrics, department budgeting and project level investment requirements.
  • Providing guidance and leadership to the team on product engineering principles by providing challenging assignments and through effective coaching, feedback, recognition, and skill assessment and training.
  • Management and/or application of PLM process, project management, general costing principles, general production processes and associated tooling and equipment, test plan creation and management, regulatory compliance requirements, supply chain management, tools such as SPC, PPAP, DFMEA, PFMEA, root-cause analysis, finite element analysis, material properties, Windchill, Creo (or other applicable software), and other areas of product engineering.
