A growing water resources group is seeking a geomorphologist with a focus on sediment transport and fish restoration. This person would help engineering teams create fish passage and restream restoration designs. This person would join a skilled and experienced team of geomorphologists interested in professional growth and restoring natural stream processes. This group supports several major multi-year transportation programs and a long-term general engineering consultant contract for WSDOT. In addition, the group supports offices regionally (WA, OR, ID, UT). You will work closely with fish biologists and engineers to develop stream restoration and habitat designs that use natural stream processes. What You'll Do: Under direction of more senior Scientist, follows clearly established methods to assist in conducting research, gathering basic scientific information and data, and conducting and assisting in field investigations among other supporting activities. Based on prescribed methodology, sets up test equipment as necessary to obtain scientific data. Using established prescribed templates, prepares data analysis, modeling, written reports, maps, etc. as appropriate to support findings as it pertains to the natural or man-made environment in the study area. Under the assistance of a Senior Scientist, prepares assessment of potential effects from construction and/or operation of proposed transportation projects. Maintains administrative records, collections, and files related to specific projects. Keeps current with trends, literature, and new developments in ecology and environmental science as it relates to their specific technical area of proficiency. Assists team in the production of project deliverables. Performs other duties as assigned. What You'll Need: Bachelor's degree in Geology, Biology, Ecology, Environmental Science, Archeology, Anthropology, or related field What You'll Bring: Assessing reach and watershed conditions, Assessing physical and fluvial processes that influence existing and proposed channel planform, geometry, and sediment supply, Assessing erosional and depositional processes as they relate to land-use, climate change, riverine and floodplain stability, and ecological function, Assessing lateral channel migration and slope stability, Assessing geohazards, Assessing the potential for long-term aggradation or degradation at proposed stream crossings, Preparing sections of Preliminary Hydraulic Design (PHD) and Final Hydraulic Design (FHD) documentation for WSDOT fish passage projects, and Producing basis of design reports, floodplain analyses, channel migration analyses, and sediment transport studies. Required Skills and Experience: Bachelor’s Degree in geology, physical geography, environmental science, civil engineering, or a closely related field, Minimum of 0-2 years of experience or emphasis in geomorphology (Fluvial or Coastal), watershed characteristics, river hydraulics, and/or river restoration, Strong technical writing and reviewing skills, Understanding of quaternary geology and a desire to become an expert, and An ability to conduct fieldwork in uneven terrain and adverse weather conditions. What We Prefer: M.S. or Ph.D. in fluvial geomorphology, physical geography, geology, civil/water resources engineering, environmental science, or a closely related field. Experience with modeling sediment transport and sediment collection. Experience with GIS software programs (we are an ArcGIS shop) for geomorphic and water resources analysis and map preparation. Licensed Geologist, or PE, Engineer-in-training, or geologist-in-training titles. Experience with field survey and/or hydrometric data collection. The pay range for Washington is $54,575.47 - $81,863.20. Please note that the pay range provided is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting.
