What are the responsibilities and job description for the Police Sergeant position at Hometown with Heart?
The Sergeant position is a supervisory position in the Shawnee Police Department which requires strong leadership, time management, and organizational skills. This position is responsible for daily law enforcement activities including delegating and assigning work, managing emergency situations that occur during the shift, and ensuring required documentation related to shift incidents is completed. This position will be assigned to the Patrol Division, will be responsible for observing and evaluating the work of officers, and will play a key role in motivating and developing officers. The Sergeant performs the duties of a Police Officer as required.
Position Responsibilities:
- Directly supervise 6 to 12 individuals each shift assuring adequate staffing.
- Assign officers to patrol areas; calls for back up assistance when necessary.
- Document absences and tardiness associated with assigned personnel.
- Approve vacation requests and signing off on sick leave.
- Determine the number of officers to handle a call.
- Ensure officers follow proper procedures with regard to safety, equipment, and vehicles.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Five (5) years total experience as a commissioned regular full-time officer for a municipal or state law enforcement agency. Three (3) of the required five (5) years must be employment with the City of Shawnee Police Department as a Police Officer.
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- A minimum of 64 college credit hours, or an Associate's Degree.
- Completion of the City/Department Knowledge Test administered on January 9, 2023, with a passing score.

- A three - five page resume:
- Page 1 detailing experience.
- Pages 2 - 5 detailing education and specialized training, special projects, committees, community service and/or other accomplishments.
- College transcripts and/or a copy of the diploma received from an accredited college or university.
- Written request for Veterans' Preference.

- February 24th: Eligibility List Provided to the Chief
