What are the responsibilities and job description for the CUSTODIAN - 20 Hours 3-7 PM position at Hope Elementary School?
Scituate School Department anticipates an opening for a custodian for the school district, based out of Hope Elementary School. 20 hrs per week, shift differential may apply. Monday - Friday 3 pm to 7 pm.
As appropriate, depending on work schedule/shift, opens the building for use; unlocks doors; turns on lights; checks heat; makes rounds checking for vandalism or damage; reports maintenance or repair needs; closes building for the night; locks and secures windows and doors;
Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and polishes floors;
Vacuums rugs and carpets;
Cleans restrooms and replenishes supplies;
Empties wastebaskets and recycle bins;
Washes walls, windows, fountains, and blackboards/whiteboards;
Replaces burnt out light bulbs;
Clean, dusts furniture/woodwork, window ledges and sills;
Moves and arranges tables and chairs;
Performs setup and break down, as appropriate;
Operates a variety of custodial equipment such as scrubbers and polishers, vacuum cleaners, push brooms, mops, leaf blowers, snow throwers, mowers and tractors;
Maintains building and areas adjacent to building in clean, safe and sanitary condition by picking up trash and litter;
Observes and reports the need for repairs;
Participates in through cleaning of school plant during summer vacation, including, but not
limit to, washing walls, cleaning light fixtures, thoroughly cleaning furniture, scrapes and cleans baseboards, stripping and waxing floors;
Secures building, as appropriate;
Performs immediate emergency cleanup resulting from vandalism, breakage, spilling or illness, including an occasional ceiling tile replacement;
Sweeps walks, removes snow from and salt walkways and entrances
Monitors boilers, heaters, air conditioning and circulation units;
Mows, trims grass and performs other light landscaping duties;
During summer months, weekends, and school vacations, does routine and minor painting;
Does minor plumbing, such as plunging, which does not require licensure;
Does minor, limited electrical work, such as changing a wall plate, which does not
require licensure;
Performs related work as required/assigned by the head custodian, principal, and director of operations;
(Note: at Elementary Schools, normally the Head Custodian performs the lawn
maintenance duties; at the High School/Middle School, the Groundskeeper normally performs the lawn maintenance duties.)
KNOWLEDGE. ABILITIES AND SKILLS
Ability to understand and follow simple oral and/or written instructions;
Ability to carry and move light loads and to climb ladders;
Ability to perform repetitive manual tasks without close supervision;
Ability to acquire knowledge of cleaning materials, methods, equipment and procedures;
Ability to learn to operate light custodial equipment safely and to exercise care in its use.
