Library Media Specialist

POSITION SUMMARY
The school Library Media Specialist has the responsibility to provide the leadership and expertise necessary to ensure that the library media program is an integral part of the instructional program. To do this, the Library Media Specialist assumes the following separate but overlapping roles: 1) Information Specialist, 2) Teacher, and 3) Instructional Consultant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Information Specialist:
- To serve as information specialist and resource consultant to teachers and students
- To provide staff development for teachers in the use of media center and equipment
- To notify faculty and students of new materials, services and programs
- To attend professional workshops and conferences to gain knowledge and incorporate the most appropriate concepts into the LMC program
- To assume responsibility for selection of materials that will meet the needs of the users by organizing, maintaining and processing all media materials
- To take inventory by weeding, replacing and repairing materials the end of year and on an as needed basis
- To provide a schedule that assures all students and teachers have easy access to the LMC
Teacher:
- To implement the ADE Library Media Curriculum Frameworks
- To plan and implement the LMC program of service to students and faculty
- To provide group instruction and individual user guidance for location of resources and development of research techniques;
- To create a library media center environment that is conducive to learning and inviting to patrons;
- To promote literacy by encouraging students to read for pleasure and information and by motivating their reading through a variety of programs;
- To assist students in developing competency in listening, viewing, reading and interpretation skills;
- To train users to develop searching and retrieval skills to obtain information;
Instructional Consultant:
- To support teacher instructional plans to coordinate and integrate effectively library services across the curriculum;
- To collaborate with teachers to incorporate information skills into the classroom curriculum and assist them in developing resource based units and activities;
- To serve on campus curriculum committee and participate in team leader meetings, support staff planning, and faculty meetings;
- To recommend student-level literature to teachers and encourage them to read to their classrooms;
- To perform additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by employees supervisor, the principal, or the superintendent

Education
Minimum of Masters Degree with an accredited educational institution. Other requirements per job description.
Experience
3 years teaching/administrative experience per Arkansas state licensure requirements. Other requirements per job description.
Certificates & Licenses
Valid Arkansas teachers license with necessary Library Media Science endorsement to meet ADE certification accreditation standards for the position.
Computer Skills
Ability to apply basic computer programs (spreadsheet, Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint, others) to enhance job performance. (Others could include e-School, HAC/TAC, AR, Destiny Library Management or similar program)
Other Requirements
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and the school community.
Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication.
Ability to perform duties with awareness of all federal, state, and district requirements.
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional documents. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to perform basic math operations to meet job expectations.
