GENERAL FUNCTION
The Program Instructor II-Dance will be primarily responsible for planning and implementing curriculum/related activities and instruction and providing quality leadership and supervision in dance classes, while maintaining a safe, non-competitive environment for YMCA members.
KNOW HOW
Ø A minimum of 18 years of age and a high school diploma or its equivalent.
Ø 2-3 years experience instructing preferred.
Ø Basic knowledge of skills/techniques used in dance preferred.
Ø Ability to demonstrate basic technique and form.
Ø Ability to communicate with preschool to middle school aged children.
Ø Visually inspect participation space for safety.
Ø Maintain current certifications in First Aid, Safety & Risk Management, Child Abuse Prevention and New Employee Orientation or the ability to obtain within 90 days of employment.
PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Ø Supervise participants during class in order to ensure safety.
Ø Introduce yourself and make efforts to recognize members on subsequent visits.
Ø Develop and maintain relationships that promote the building of small communities.
Ø Create a motivating environment that is friendly and non-competitive.
Ø Arrive for shift on time and dressed appropriately following the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis dress code.
Ø Assist in the set-up and take down of equipment (if applicable to the class).
Ø Assist/lead class in a safe warm-up.
Ø Be attentive and ready to assist participants on all skills.
Ø Provide positive and instructional feedback to participants on skill attempts.
Ø Provide coverage for classes in case of your absence and notify the Program Coordinator.
Ø Provide safe programs and environment for all participants, volunteers and staff.
Ø Be a positive role model and conduct self in accordance with the YMCA Mission.
Ø Incorporate and encourage the use of the YMCA core values.
Ø Attend scheduled department meetings and training offered.
Ø Actively participate in the Invest-In-Youth annual campaign.
Ø Assist with other projects or activities as needed.
Ø Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Ø Ability to lift 40 pounds, spot 80 pounds, transport, set-up and take down equipment.
Ø Ability to stand and sit for extended periods of time.
Ø Ability to project voice so participants can hear skill instructions.
Ø Ability to visibly observe program participants.
Ø Ability to visually inspect equipment and report any cleaning or repairs needed.
Ø Ability to crouch and bend/twist at the waist and work in a kneeling position.
Ø Ability to perform repetitive motions.
Ø Ability to communicate effectively with participants, staff and volunteers.
Ø Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
Ø Ability to solve problems/address participant concerns and use sound judgment even when distracted by noise and activity.
Ø Ability to observe and promote safety and security procedures.
Ø Ability to physically and mentally respond to emergencies and administer CPR and First Aid effectively.
MEMBER INVOLVEMENT SKILLS:
· Be informed and up-to-date on the latest developments in your field.
· Acquaint members with other YMCA programs and benefits.
· Develop relationships that promote the building of small communities.
· Recommend participation in a variety of programs.
· Support our YMCA annual campaign, and invite members to participate.
· Be able to articulate the role and importance of volunteers.
· Be informed about volunteer opportunities.
· Provide an environment in which valuing diversity is encouraged and the 40 Developmental Assets can be built and emphasized.
EFFECT ON END RESULT:
· Maintain/increase enrollment in classes.
· Positive evaluations by participants or parents.
· Equipment is maintained in a clean, safe and appropriate manner.
· Evidence of attended YMCA certifications and trainings as required by Association, Branch, and Program Director. Copies will be kept on file.
· Evidence of knowledge of Membership By Design, building of small communities within the Sports Department.
