The Corporate Communications team at Humana is responsible for leading and executing the strategies for external stakeholder, media relations, employee communications, public affairs, issues, and crisis communications, enhancing, and building the Humana Brand. The team plays a central role in promoting Humana’s brand promise while enhancing its reputation across various corporate stakeholders.
Against that backdrop, we are seeking a dynamic public relations leader to join our team as Director, Corporate Communications, primarily supporting Humana’s Medicare business with additional responsibility for regional public and media relations across the nation. We’re looking for a self-starter who can develop productive relationships with journalists, counsel senior leaders, manage high-profile issues and carry public relations plans from concept to completion.
Working under minimal supervision, you will help grow Humana’s Medicare business by implementing policies and programs to enhance and protect corporate reputation and brand among external audiences, such as news media, consumers, thought leaders, health care providers and others. You will also advise executives, while developing functional communications and public relations strategies on matters of significance. You’ll have the resources to bring your creative ideas to life, and you’ll work for an innovative, growing organization in one of today’s most challenging sectors – health care.
This position is open for work at home or in any Humana office, with a preference for locations in the Eastern or Central time zones.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Enhance Humana’s reputation – particularly across the organization’s Medicare business – through well-executed strategic media relations, public relations and communications
- Responsibilities encompass media relations, public relations, digital and social media, crisis and issues management, and thought leadership communications
- Act as company spokesperson and media liaison with national, regional and industry trade media; foster strong relationships with news media outlets; pitch media and track results
- Advise Humana’s leadership on working with the media; provide counsel on issues and crisis management
- Unify compelling words, memorable images and the latest technology to inform, engage and energize key external and internal audiences in support of Humana’s strategic objectives
- Exercise independent judgment and decision making on complex issues
- Manage the work of public relations agencies, and lead a team of three direct reports
Key Candidate Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have extensive experience (typically 10 years) in media relations, PR, or communications with a major (i.e. Fortune 500) corporation or national PR agency. This person will also demonstrate the ability to plan, lead and execute integrated communications strategies for diverse audiences. He/she will be a creative, clear strategic thinker with strong strategic planning, writing, editing and problem solving skills. The successful candidate will also be adept at taking complex information and simplifying it into simple, engaging messages for varied audiences or stakeholder groups. Bachelor’s degree is required, preferably in communications, journalism, public relations or related field.
In addition to the above, the following professional qualifications and personal attributes are also sought:
- Proven crisis management background
- Familiarity with public relations measurement techniques
- Ability to manage multiple business areas and projects simultaneously, including prioritization, issues resolution and execution of strategic plans
- Experience managing external vendor relationships
- Excellent oral and written communications skills, including the polish, poise and executive presence needed for alignment and cross-functional support
- Highly collaborative mindset and excellent relationship-building skills, including the ability to engage many diverse stakeholders and SMEs and win their co-ownership in the outcome
- Abundant creativity, coupled with a strong desire to learn
- Ability to perform and exceed expectations in a fast-paced, highly dynamic environment
- Social media and digital communications savvy
- PR agency experience, background in health care communications, and fluency in Spanish and/or other languages are strong plusses, but not required
