Job Description
As Engineering Field Technician for the Hunter Communications Engineering team, you’ll work closely with outside plant engineers, GIS technicians, and project managers to gather information, solve problems, and help build the foundation of our top-tier fiber optic network and services to homes and businesses in the Eugene, Oregon area.
Your job duties will have you working in the field in the Eugene area, with occasional travel to other Hunter service areas and overnight stays as needed. The schedule for this full-time position is 5 days a week, working 40 hours from Monday to Friday, with overtime as necessary to meet project deadlines and on-call work as necessary to respond to emergency locate requests.
We’re looking for somebody who is organized, disciplined, and determined - somebody who enjoys being outside and interacting with the public and wants to learn more about the telecommunications industry. Job Duties
Your duties as an Engineering Field Technician will involve training to perform a variety of responsibilities and tasks, with the essential functions of your role requiring:
- Performing in-person utility pole and attachment inspections using a variety of tools and techniques such as visual observation, measuring sticks, digital cameras, and electronic surveying equipment.
- Accurately entering gathered data into pre-defined forms and reporting observations in a clear and concise manner.
- Locating and marking Hunter-owned underground plant using radio detection tools, maps, and other resources.
- Working closely with cross-departmental teams to manage priorities and ensure the timely gathering and reporting of utility pole information.
- Performing inspections of Hunter-owned assets, reporting on their status and recommending actions.
- Communicating with members of the public to successfully gain access to utility easements, explain the necessity and value of your work, and satisfy property owner concerns.
- Constantly working outdoors in all kinds of weather and on all kinds of terrain.
Requirements

- Ability to lift and carry tools exceeding 20lbs in weight and approximately 20ft in length.
- Ability to use tools to manipulate and maneuver vault and manhole lids up to or exceeding 100lbs in weight.
- Detail Oriented
- A high degree of professionalism, tact, and sensitivity, along with the ability to positively represent Hunter Communications.
- Working knowledge of Windows-based computers, including familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Google Earth and other Google Suite tools.
- Ability to walk on outdoor terrain in all weather conditions for long periods.
- A commitment to a strong workplace safety culture, adherence to policies and best practices.
- A valid driver’s license – drivers of company vehicles are subject to a pre-employment drug screen, MVR check, and random testing.
